And once America started gaining more land via the Louisiana purchase and the Mexican American war and started expanding westward both side finally posed the question about slavery the south wanted to keep it and expand westward but the north wanted to stop the expansion of slavery and the south saw that as the beginning of the end to their way of life so a delicate balance was put in place with more states joining the union the states had the option to join the union as a free state or a slave state. as more and more states started to join each side gaining one up on the other side and visa v but eventually the north gained more states now fearing that the north would take away there slaves and destroy their economy and their way of life and south opted to leave the union and start their own country  </title>
