It is important to not only build skill deficits, but also to ensure that an EC student has an opportunity to be successful on the EOG. I do not agree that a student who has a functioning deficit should be required to take the same test as his or her non-disabled peers. The key I have found is using grade level material but differentiating and scaffolding the material to meet the needs of each individual student. The material needs to be chunked, and rolled out in small steps to ensure success. I have found the pay off to be tremendous! As noted earlier many EC students fall further behind each school year because the primary focus of instruction when using research-based programs focus heavily on elementary skill deficits. Using a differentiated approach to learning, a teacher is capable of building deficit skills by including them in the teaching of a lesson. For example, in 7th grade students begin working on two-step algebraic equations. These equations can also be used to strength basic math skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. One lesson or unit can target a variety of skills, and prepare a student to be successful moving forward with grade level material.

Coming in as a second year teacher full time to a new school with a wide variety of diverse student populations was difficult in the beginning because I had to establish ground rules and hold firm to them. Some students were upset that they lost their past teacher and were defiant to begin with. However, over the last year I developed more bonds with students through projects and using media in different ways than they thought possible. I tried my best to incorporate ideas from many other cultures and religions to spread information throughout our population of students and help with children understanding that though their classmates may be different, it is not a reason to bully them or treat them different than others in their class. We worked all year long and this second year with these students has proven to be much more effective with classroom management and making sure we are capable of higher learning in our classes. 
We also talk about the fact that everyone is good at something and no one is good at everything! It requires practice and in our class we make "Practice Pieces" and while trying our best, we can turn them into our own master pieces. They had a wonderful art teacher who like myself had high expectations of the students and they were more likely to chat with friends than listen to instructions if I were to not buckle down. In my classes, especially with older students, I like to have a slide show presentation at the beginning of any new lesson with information I expect the students to learn and know. We work hard on drilling in Elements of Art and Principals of Design at the end of lessons to get out excess energy and have a routine that all students know and understand. The power point helps students who need to read.
