Ötzi the Iceman is a mummy from about 5,300 years ago or the Copper/Bronze age. It is said he died in 3255 BCE.

Where was he found?

Ötzi was found in 1991 by hikers in the Schnalstal/Val Senales Valley glacier in Italy. Otzi died on the glacier and was preserved in the ice.

Ötzi was crossing Tisenjoch/Giogo di Tisa in the Senales Valley, South Tryol, Italy, when he was murdered by an arrow to his left shoulder. There was a 2 cm entry wound found in his back. The flint arrow hit the subclavian artery and he bled to death. The arrow might have been pulled out of his body, which broke the shaft and left the arrow head in him. It is believed he was 45 when he was murdered.

Researchers don't know why he was killed but they do have a description of what he looked like. He was five foot two with medium length wavy dark hair, a beard, and brown eyes. He was similar to a farmer or shepard. He had over 61 tattoos all over his body which makes some people think he was a shaman. His tattoos were simply just horizontal or vertical lines.

Ötzi ate two meals before he died. The first meal was meat from a goat/antelope called a chamois. The second meal was herb bread and red deer meat. Each meal also contained fruits, vegetables and einkorn wheat bran. The pollen in his food helped researchers determine that he feasted in a conifer forest of mid-altitude. The pollen also indicated that crops that grew native to this area included legumes and wheat. The condition of the pollen determined that Ötzi died in the springtime.

Ötzi is so significant because he is the oldest, most prehistoric, and well preserved mummy to ever be found. He has not been altered, and was discovered with his full clothing and equipment. This new data assisted researchers in gaining information that had been impossible to gain before Ötzi had been discovered. He provided scientists with a view of how life was during the Copper Age. Ötzi's body was found clothed in his rare clothing, along with an axe, flint knife, bow and arrows, grass cape, leather pouch, and leather shoes. Through examining his blood, bones, DNA, and stomach contents, scientists are able to study the presence of diseases, his occupation, social status, diet, and overall health.

1. Ötzi didn't have a a 12th rib cage and he lacked both of his wisdom teeth.
2. He had many diseases and health issues including Lyme disease, alarming levels of arsenic in his system, gum disease, tooth decay, worn joints, hardened arteries, gallstones, and a growth on his toe from frostbite.
3. He has 19 genetic living relatives in the area of Tyrol, Austria.
4. Through studying his DNA, scientists were able to determine that he was lactose intolerant.
5. Ötzi is associated with a curse. The reason this is believed is that 7 people who were involved in the discovery died within a year.

Ötzi's Curse (Legend)

At the age of 52, Kurt Fritz died because of an avalanche. He was the mountain guide for Helmut and Erika Simon and was the first to uncover Ötzi’s face.

At the age of 64, a forensic pathologist named Rainer Henn from University of Innsbruck died because of a car accident. He was actually going for addressing a conference where he was about to present his research studies about Ötzi.

At the age of 69, Helmut Simon (known as the father of Ötzi because he was the first one to find The Ice Mummy) suffered a 300-foot fall and his dead body was found in a stream.

At the age of 45, Dieter Warnecke, a member of the rescue team who found the body of Helmut Simon died because of a heart attack. He died an hour after Helmut’s funeral.

At the age of 47, Rainer Hölz died of a brain tumor. He was actually the creator of a documentary about Ötzi’s recovery.

These are only five of the seven who died.
