Can one note change all the emotions involved in one song? Or are there enough notes, rhythms, and patterns that repeat to keep the piece to keep the listener interested? Ratliff would argue that a single note is the equivalent to being a single person in a crowd full of people. I would like to agree to disagree with this. While he presents it in a positive light, I see it on the contrary. One single note just repeated over and over does not really change a piece. A group of notes can create a more effective impact. For example, in the song Pyramid, mentioned by Ratliff, the single note is massively emphasized and it causes me, as a listener, to grow annoyed and want to turn it off.
