LSD causes the senses of space, distance, and time to become altered. People say they "hear" colors or "see" sounds, and have strange feelings and strong emotions. Many users refer to an "acid trip" — when the effects don't let up and can last for up to 12 hours at a time. LSD also can cause "bad trips" — when users experience panic, confusion, sadness, and scary images. Bad reactions can happen with the first use and a user may have flashbacks later, experiencing the feelings of a bad trip even after the drug wears off.

LSD is short for lysergic acid diethylamide. It is an illicit hallucinogen that comes as a white powder or clear liquid. Typically taken by mouth, the psychedelic drug can also be injected into a vein or inhaled through the nose. LSD is a mind-altering drug that changes behavior, mood and a person’s perception of physical reality. But while LSD can cause effects characteristic of both depressant and stimulant drugs, it is classified by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Institutes of Health as a hallucinogen, not as a depressant.

LSD, or lysergic acid diethylamide, is a hallucinogenic drug that was first synthesized a Swiss scientist in the 1930s. During the Cold War, the CIA conducted clandestine experiments with LSD (and other drugs) for mind control, information gathering and other purposes. Over time, the drug became a symbol of the 1960s counterculture, eventually joining other hallucinogenic and recreational drugs at rave parties.
