Artists were forced to follow socialist realism . Those who did not follow like Osip Mandelstam were imprisoned, tortured, and exiled then he wrote an "Ode to Stalin" to clam down the threats. Dispite the limitations on creativity some artist were able to produce some magnificent works like "Quiet Flows the Don" by Mikhail Sholokhov which won a Nobel Prize for literature. The propaganda was used to make people like Joseph Stalin. Na example is a poster saying "Thanks to dear Stalin for a happy childhood."
