Symptoms can include: diarrhea, fever, chills, abdominal pain, and headache.

To prevent salmonella, cook poultry, eggs, and ground beef thoroughly. Don't drink unpasteurized milk. Always wash your hands after contact with animals or changing diapers. 

Animals or humans can get salmonella. It's acquired by consuming undercooked meat, poor handwashing, and eating foods contaminated with the bacteria. 

To treat salmonella, most people only need fluids and recover in a week or less. If it's severe, it may require IV fluids and antibiotics.

Salmonella rarely affects the taste or appearance of foods, so there is no way to know if the food is contaminated.

Salmonella is more common in the summer due to foods being warmer and unrefrigerated.

Salmonella can spread from animals to humans, so always wash your hands after handling an animal.
