Was I Aware of the Standards for K-6?

I was completely unaware of the standards for computer science. I primarily focused on reading the standards for 3-5, since I teach the third grade. I can honestly say I think I have not paid much attention to the computer science standards based merely on the fact that computer science is a "specials" course at my school, meaning it is a class taught by another teacher besides myself. I assumed the standards for computer science would be fairly basic, focusing primarily on typing skills. The proficiency with the keyboard is part of a 3rd grade standard, but it is one of the skills students learn and add onto as the standards go on. What amazed me the most was the level of complexity within the computer science standards, namely that it is comprised of 5 core concepts (Computing Devices and Systems, Networking and Communication, Data and Information, Programs and Algorithms, and Impact and Culture).

How Might I Implement these Standards in My Classroom?

I can use a variety of these concepts in my classroom. I can first implement standard 3-5.CD.1, which involves the keyboard proficiency. After students complete a writing piece, I can instruct them to type it on a laptop. The laptops can provide for differentiation, as well. For example, my low group of students can focus on improving their typing skills, speed, etc. My advanced group can use spell-check and possibly grammar-check to check their work once it is typed up. The Internet can be used for guided research or playing games to accompany a lesson. Other tools, such as the calculator, can be utilized when students are completing an online math activity.

3rd Grade English/Language Arts Standards

I can address the third grade English/ Language Arts standard 3.W.3.1. (Write persuasive compositions in a variety of forms).

Right now, my students are learning about writing opinion pieces. Once we have completed lessons on topic sentences and sentence structure, I can allow the students to research further using the laptops. Computer science standards that fall under the core concept "Computing Devices and Systems" can be addressed. These standards involve proficient use of a computer and use of wireless Internet. Keyboard proficiency can be examined as students type their final writing piece into a Word document. Use of wireless Internet will be examined as students conduct guided research on their topics. Because it is third grade and they have differing levels of proficiency with computers, specific topics will be provided for students to type directly into Google. The use of laptops to research and type the opinion writing will pair English/Language Arts skills with Computer Science. I believe the learning experience will be improved, mainly because my students are motivated by technology.

Use of Resources to Improve Instructional Practices: Twitter

I do not believe that social media applications will directly improve my instructional practices. Since my students are third graders, a lot of them have only heard terms such as "Twitter" and "Facebook", but are not actually skilled in how to use them. Instead of using the literal social media apps, I model something similar in person. For example, when we close out for the week on Friday afternoons, my class gathers in a circle, and we say three things we feel after the week is over. However, the students have to say "hashtag" before their word, and each adjective is limited to one word. For example, I had a really good week last week, so I started off our Twitter circle by saying, "#Blessed, #Tired, #Inspired". It is a short but sweet way for the students to reflect on their week, get in tune with their emotions, and it also provides a real-world model of a social media app.

Resources to Use Now or in the Future: eLearning

Since I live in Colorado, snow days are bound to happen (as I'm sure they do in Indiana!). Because of this, I would like to familiarize myself with the eLearning Day Program in the case of a snow day. It is unfortunate when students miss a day due to inclement weather, then the rest of the calendar gets rearranged. I would like to become familiar with the application to begin using it next school year. The application could also be used in the case of illness. I just had a student miss a week because of the flu, and the eLearning would have greatly benefited him.

Pixton

Although I have not yet used Pixton in my class, I would love to begin using it. Pixton allows students to create their own comics or cartoons. I could use this tool in Reading. When prompted to provide a summary of the story, the students can create a comic. It is a fantastic way to foster creativity, engage students, and provide a new take on literacy.

Digital Citizenship

Digital citizenship is a fundamental skill that students should learn before engaging in educational activities on the computer. Digital citizenship entails students learning how to appropriately use technology. I believe my third graders should be learning digital citizenship now. They are at the peak of being interested in different technology forms, whether it be a tablet or video games, and they are steadily being introduced to new technological forms. One of the biggest topics in the media right now is cyberbullying. Students should learn the dangers and seriousness of cyberbullying before they are able to partake in online social media.
