In his essay "Joyas Voladoras" (2012), author Brian Doyle claims to live every second to the fullest even through the most miserable of times. He supports this claim by describing drastically different, unique ways of life with heavy imagery, comparing and contrasting organisms similarities, and then exemplifying characteristics of the living beings that he mentions. Doyle's purpose is to appeal to the audiences emotions in order to cause a pensive mindset. He establishes an awestruck, erudite tone for the general human population- an audience with emotional connections to nature and living organisms.

Doyle appears ethical and trustworthy to the audience by providing scientific facts, statistics and proven statements. He states how "the biggest heart in the world is inside the blue whale..." and that "a child could walk around it, head high, bending only to step through the valves.." in order to provide a more scientific understanding of his facts through comparison for the reader. Throughout this essay, Doyle appeals to many of the audiences emotions, mainly nostalgia. He describes situations the whole audience can relate to on a personal level like how "the memory of [the reader's] father’s voice early in the morning echoing from the kitchen where he is making pancakes for his children.." remains present throughout their lives. Logically, Doyle states many facts about the organisms he highlights and how living beings are all similar in some ways. He reveals how "No living being is without interior liquid motion..." and that "...we all churn inside." in order to provide a sense of reasoning and a knowledgeable mindset for the audience.

1. Asyndeton- "So much held in a heart in a day, an hour, a moment." Doyle's use of an asyndeton emphasizes how even the little moments in each organisms life matters. As he highlights the differences between living beings, he also highlights the main similarity, which is the heart and how much it emotionally and physically impacts organisms.
2. Metaphor- "A hummingbird's heart is the size of a pencil eraser." Doyle's utilization of a metaphor states a scientific fact which suggests how small the hummingbird's heart is compared to the other organisms he writes about. This proves his knowledge, but also appeals to the message on how any kind of small things are important too.
3. Simile- "[The blue whale's heart is] as big as a room. It is a room, with four chambers." Similar to the metaphor on the size of a hummingbird's heart, Doyle compares the blue whale's heart to the size of a room. The large comparisons he utilizes highlights the importance of the organ in a different organism, which is much larger than a tiny bird. This leads us back to Doyle's main message, no matter how large or small, emotional impacts will inevitably occur.
4. Asyndeton- "We are utterly alone in the end- not mother and father, not wife or husband, not lover, not child, not friend." Doyle's usage of an asyndeton signifies the negatives of humans having emotions, which homosapiens are born with. He highlights how humans are alone in the end, no matter what, humans are left with no one as they die.
5. Metaphor- "We open windows to each but we live alone in the house of the heart." Doyle compares a heart to a house, suggesting that humans would rather deal with constant familiarity and protection of their emotions and vulnerability, than experience any change due to fear of inevitable grief.

As he starts to highlight other organisms differences and similarities, he applies an awestruck tone due to his interests and amazement of the facts he's stating. He writes this text to embrace one of the simplest but also most complex joys in life, and how many beings cannot survive without it. The speaker feels as though not very many people understand the significance of love, and more specifically hearts, in life.
