In essence, it allows and guides students to "construct" their own understanding by engaging in critical thinking that is collaborative, authentic, and for which they are accountable. The understanding that results from this is deeper and easier for students to relate to their own lives. Rather than passively receiving information by lecture or Direct Instruction, students actively explore topics and come to their own conclusions and realizations. In English and Language Arts, constructivism takes learning from simply reading texts for comprehension or writing persuasive essays in a void to a place where students understand that language is complex, cultural, has real-world effects, has great possibility, and is a tool that they can use to shape their lives. There are prominent authors, novels, and a set idea of grammar used in acadmea, but literature and language are always evolving and ultimately about critical thinking.
