The two characters are vastly different. The woman seems to be very quiet and reserved and tries very hard to please the man. The man seems very direct and demanding, not giving the woman a choice in a way. He seems to try to manipulate her into thinking that she's making her own choices when you can see that the man is pushing the decision on her. Hemingway develops the girl through dialog with the man and shows the metaphor of the white elephant. Although the man being to apologize to the girl he gets frustrated with her and goes to the bar to avoid her.

Both the American and the girl having different views on the situation. The girl is a very shy, quiet girl who wants to please the American. She is unsure of what she wants to do and tries to avoid the topic. The American tries his hardest to convince the girl to have the operation but tries to give off the impression that he doesn't really care. However the man has his mind set and doesn't really listen to the girl. Trying to manipulate her into thinking if she gets the operation that its her choice.

The American is portrayed as rugged, self-controlled, and knowledgeable. He also acts in Hemingway's perception of masculinity throughout the entire piece. Meanwhile, the woman, Jig, is less sure of what she wants unlike the American, and is very reluctant about many things, specifically the operation in question.

The American is portrayed and the typical man and fails to provide the girl with the emotional support that she needs. He also tried to tells her what she should and should not do to benefit himself. The girl is shown to be helpless, confused, and indecisive.

The man loves, or at least is infatuated by the girl. The girl seems numb, frequently reiterating that she doesn't feel anyway, she doesn't care. She is given choices, but will only do what she believes will please the man. The dialogue between them feels bland and forced. He tries and fails to provide her with support her and allow her to make her own decisions, however these attempts feel inauthentic.

Hemingway didn't go into much detail about the characters, so the only thing we know about them is through their dialogue. When they were going back and forth about the operation, at first glance, it seemed like the man was very open to whatever she felt like doing, but , he kept pushing her to go through with it. He was trying to make her feel like he would support her no matter what, but he kept pushing her. This confused her and made her feel even more stressed. She's not sure what she should do

We have two very different characters within this story. The woman seems very delicate and quiet, with the desire to please others (including the man). She seems scared, but wishes to do whatever makes the man happy even if it sacrifices her own happiness. Then there is the man who seems strong and demanding. It seems as though he is forcing and encouraging the woman to do something she isn't positive she wants to do. This story I feel represents the basic relationship structure of the time, meaning that the man tells the woman what to do and the woman does so.

The two characters we get introduced to, the "girl" and the "man" (or the American). The "American" seems to be controlling in the relationship he is in with the "girl." With some research, we can figure out that the "girl" has become pregnant with the American's child. He wants her to abort the child, while the girl does not. The girl seems to be somewhat shy , but can also be seen as hesitant. The American is controlling, and it almost seems like he is trying to manipulate her into getting rid of the child.

The American is portrayed as strong and tough in the relationship while the girl is portrayed as quiet and reserved. The man tries to persuade her to have the operation while insisting that it is her choice. Although, he tries to convince her that they will be happier with the operation and that nothing will come between him. The girl does not really know what she wants and she loves the American, so she is willing to do anything for him. The man doesn't understand what she means by the hills because he does not want her to go through with the pregnancy. The whole situation seems challenging and stressful for the young girl because she is scared and does not know whether she should have the operation.

My first impression was the girl was written as if she were younger, like too young to be drinking a beer and the American was an older man with more life experience. This impression could relate to what is happening in the story, like the girl not being taken seriously for what she feels and the American being ignorant and selfish.

Hemmingway develops the characters through dialogue. As the American man and the "girl" (Jig?) converse over drinks about something that appears to be bothering them. They discuss an operation and whether the girl should go through with it. The girl, desperately trying to please the man, evaluates everything he has to say, meanwhile the man has evident feelings about the matters already, in which he is trying to subversively persuade the girl into realizing, baiting her with the promise of "love," and that all of their troubles will go away should she do the surgery.
