Subramania Bharathi was an Indian poet, freedom fighter and social reformer from Tami Nadu. His poems were patriotic, brought out the heroism, bravery and valor in every Indian to fight against the oppressing British rule. He also threw light on many societal problems like the lack of education to girls, child labor and caste discrimination.  One of his poems, depicts a revolutionary woman, who is educated, brave and is strong to correct society’s mistakes. Bharathi’s pen was harsh to superstitions and societal myths. His poems, written in Tamil, were not only sensational but also inspiring and motivational.  He opposed child marriage, dowry and strongly supported women’s rights, gender equality and widow remarriage.

He died saving the Indian flag. He is probably the only person in history to have given his life, defending his motherland’s flag

He was involved in campaigning and negotiations for India's independence, publishing journals advocating political rights and social freedom for Dalits, and contributing significantly to the establishment of the state of India. He concentrated on educating Dalits and making an effect on uplifting their lives.
