(March 29, 1819 – November 9, 1880) Edwin Drake was an American driller of the first productive oil well in the U.S. Drake studied the ways of drilling salt wells. He began drilling for oil in 1858 with difficulty. Drake developed his own drilling technique, where he drove sections of pipe into the ground until bedrock was struck. Because of the success, his techniques spread around. This caused him to try to patent his drilling techniques, but he failed. He fell into years of poverty until he was awarded a pension by state legislature.

Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. “Edwin Drake.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/biography/Edwin-Laurentine-Drake.

Born in 1804, John Deere was a pioneer American inventor and manufacturer of agricultural implements such as the steel plow. During his work as a blacksmith, he noticed that wood and cast-iron plows weren't suited for the soils of the prairies. By 1838, he and his partner sold three new fashioned plows; then they sold even more until the annual output was a thousand plows. Deere began to use imported English steel and soon developed comparable steel plate. With his plows' output reaching 10,000, his business eventually grew to be Deere & Company in 1868.

Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia. “John Deere.” Encyclopædia Britannica, Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc., https://www.britannica.com/biography/John-Deere.
