Language Biography: The book (Tuki)

My name is Tucma Reich, and I’m 13 years old. I'm Argentinian and my mother-tongue is Spanish. Apart from Spanish, I can speak English and a little French.
I started learning English at primary school, when I was 6 years old. Over the years we listened to some songs and practised their lyrics, so we could sing it and studied a little grammar. But as I was older the classes were more difficult, and we hardly ever listened to any songs, it was all grammar and vocabulary. I wasn’t surprised, because I was in a school that specialises in language, and I had Italian as my second language. But now I can barely speak it.
At the moment I’m studying English at secondary school. We mostly study vocabulary, but also grammar and speaking. Something I like about these classes is that every Wednesday we listen to a song and we do an activity about it, which in most cases has something to do with what we are studying. I go to the bilingual course, so I have French (apart from English), like in primary school. But I definitely know more English than French, because it is a language that I have been studying since I was 6 years old.
Outside school I don’t really speak much English, only in very specific cases, like the other day that I was in a page that wasn’t working and I CONTACTED THE CREATOR OF THE PAGE TO FIX IT (I really wanted to use it). I don’t really do homework because, like I mentioned, I go to the bilingual course and teachers don’t send us homework, because of the time that we spend in school. When I’m returning from school I listen to English music from a band I love, Imagine Dragons, and other singers. I watch the series in English with subtitles (in English), often with my parents but sometimes alone. In 2019 I went to two places, London (England) and Edinburg (Scotland). We went to London because my mum had a friend that lives there, and we went to Edinburg because my aunt, who lives in Spain, was visiting Scotland, and we wanted to see her.
I like learning English by playing online games (kahoot), talking with natives, watching movies and series, listening to music, reading books, basically I like to learn English. When I make mistakes I try to remember them so I don’t make them the next time I talk or do exercises.

Some of our subjects in English are obviously English, Edic, Tics, etc.

Outside school I don’t really practise my English by doing exercises or things like that, I usually watch movies, videos or series in that language so I can hear other people talking with different accents, like British, Australian, American, etc., I also listen to music because I love how the English sounds when other people are singing.

I think that it’s better learning a language by doing something that you can enjoyed than doing something that you think it’s boring or stupid. (but it wasn't so difficult)

But now, in secondary school the English language it's more complex... It is not a problem, because we learn a lot of grammar in different ways, for example, writting a little text, reading, talking with my classmates and using the Language in my day. With these ways, I start to be more easy the English. Also in my school we have subjects in English, ( TICS, EDIC and Drama) to be honest it was impossible that i could not perfect it, even a little.

Outside school, I don't use much English with others, but I listen music, (a lot of England bands and singers, like " The cure" or "blur") I watch Tv series in this language and I read books or poems when I have time, sometimes I write a little text for homework or for myself. By the way, I really like the poem called " The raven" by Edgar Allan Poe.

I prefer learning a language with native people or people who knows a lot of the languaje, besides I prefer using videogames, movies or books, because it would be more easy to know how the people talk in different situations or with different people.

Talking about other things…
At the momento I’m studying English at secondary school. As in my private English classes, which I don’t hany anymore, we study a lot of grammar, vocabulary and speaking. We study vocabulary and grammar with our books and playing games too. In each bimester, we have a test of all the things we’ve seen in a unit. Also, we don’t do many translations in lessons.
Outside school I speak a lot of English. I don’t get much homework from my teachers, we do most of the things in class.
