And he protects his family because he lost his wife in one of his great battles, and won't lose another member of his family.

He probably had experiences with criminals as a young prince and young adult, and most likely decided he wanted a more "fair" way of deciding their fate. I think the princess ran into this as well, raised by her father, and became semi-barbaric herself. I think that the man she has her eye on is a commoner from a semi-poor family. She probably was taking a walk through town and laid eyes upon him - struck by love and wanting to get to know him. However, they were most likely caught by the king, and the man was sentenced for being with the princess.
