The Science of Reading by Debbie Deneen

With 68% of fourth graders not reading at grade level, literacy instruction has become a crisis in the United States, with serious long-term consequences for young learners. These consequences include a decreased likelihood of high school graduation and meaningful career success. Notably, The Science of Reading [SoR], which has been implemented in numerous US states, is credited with recently improving student reading outcomes. As a proponent of SoR, you have received an invitation from your school principal to lead a professional development session named "Can We Afford to Ignore the Science of Reading?" in your school building. In this regard, you will discuss your thoughts about the science of reading, covering the essential components of the framework and drawing from a range of materials you have read, videos you have watched, and class discussions and lectures. You should explain to your teacher audience how they can use the framework to support both ELLs and dyslexic students.

No, we can't afford to ignore SoR. I see a future where students need to smallest things read to them and it causes class to be disrupted and more class time is given to assisting students in their reading in subjects that are not about reading. For example, they can't read a math problem. This isn't the student's fault as they are not being taught how to read effetely. We need to keep teaching the SoR in our schools.
