My father founded BCCC in 1995, when it was still called TalentCanada. I was just two years old, and my family had recently moved from Saskatchewan to Vancouver.

From the beginning, my father recognized the deep creative potential within the Chinese-speaking Canadian community, especially in families where the arts weren’t traditionally seen as a viable career path. His goal was simple but revolutionary: to illuminate a way forward in the creative arts for the next generation.

What began in our garage soon became a remarkable place—a bright, hopeful community of charismatic creatives, eccentrics, and visionaries.

Like many students who’ve come through the studio, BCCC was where I found myself. It gave me the space to dream, the confidence to create, and a lifelong passion for art and design. My career today exists because of the seeds planted there.

All this is possible because my father and mother poured their heart and soul into this place. Their sweat, tears, and unwavering belief in others built a home for hundreds of aspiring artists, many of whom have gone on to make bold, thoughtful, and meaningful work.

At 30 years, BCCC has embraced generations of students. This milestone marks a critical moment in the evolution of education, East-West relations, and the dynamic of what it means to be creative. I am confident that BCCC will continue to inspire passionate interests, successful education/career paths, and foster a meaningful community.

Thank you to every student, parent, and teacher who’s been part of this journey. You’ve shaped me in ways no class or job ever could. Thank you to Mom and Dad for the reasons that go without saying.

Here’s to the last 30 years—and 30 more.

With love and gratitude,

KJH

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. and Ms. He for making me a better person and providing me with important life advice. I hope the both of you are proud of what your team and the students have accomplished!

I would also like to thank Wayne for telling me about NYU Gallatin. While my major has little to do with art or design, it has opened my eyes to so many new topics and perspectives, some of which has genuinely changed my life.

Lastly, I would like to thank the wonderful teachers at BCCC: Setareh, Amy, Jay, Dr. Gossen, and Maggie. Thank you all for giving us artistic inspiration, and preparing us for life after high school!

-Jimmy Chen

When I first joined BCCC, I didn’t have a clear sense of who I was or where I was heading. I knew I liked creating things, but I didn’t know what that meant yet. Like many people my age, I was figuring things out and unsure how design could fit into my life, or if I could ever face the scariness of college and the creative world.

However, BCCC gave me the space to grow, and I was always met with encouragement, patience, and trust in the process. I was able to explore, make mistakes, and find confidence in my work. The environment at BCCC is rare. Shout-out to all the people I have met along the way, and it is good to know that the BCCC community is very welcoming and generous.

I’m incredibly grateful to Mr. He for creating such a space, and to every teacher at BCCC who has supported me along the way!

Congratulations on 30 years of BCCC!

Best, Alvin You
