The videos of migrants interviews are very touching . The reasons of leaving their homeland are various but understandable in all cases. Where I teach, the majority of new arrived people are worker migrants and they are quite well integrated in the society. They do jobs we don't want to do for example and there is a quite tolerating atmosphere.

I think it is very important, in order to develop their empathy, not to speak about migration just as an abstract and general phenomenon: to present them some individual stories can help to make them feel closer to migrants.

According to Nora's words they are people who had the possibility to fly away. They payed €5000-10.000 to leave their countries, it's a shame!!! They are persecuted people, refugees, in search of a job or having a possibility to join the Olympic podium, it's Yusra's case. From Syria to the first refugees olympic team! Or Mildred, a journalist from Sierra Leone where there's a civil war. She lost a son and a Brother. Her video touched me a lot because she is alive, she found a shelter in Italy but she feels a great solitude, no family, no friends, it's hard!!!

As a teacher I have the possibility to witness migration first hand, there are people coming from North Africa, mostly young men, who have fled their countries due to economical problems or social turmoil, they bear the signs of a difficult past, their faces tell a story that is written in their inner self. At school we welcome some North African young men who got shelter in the hands of a local humanitarian organization called 'Migrantes liberi', they are involved in a project to help keeping our green areas alive, they take care of plants, flowers and keep school meadows in perfect shape. I have often talked to them and the supervisors of the organisation and found out that they escaped a civil war or the blackest poverty in their countries and came here in the south of Italy on fishing boats at the port of Brindisi. They are quite young so they are not married yet, they are aged from 19 to 27 and are disposed to do any work in order to collect money to be sent to their family left behind. They are quite educated with certificates and degrees, they speak good English and their manners are gentle and polite. Lots of students have made friends with them and sometimes they join with them to help with the gardening tasks.

It is an unbelievable story of Marina Hulia, a woman who decided to help the kids and mothers who escaped Chechnya because of persecution, war and violence. She founded two democratic schools which function at the railway station and are entirely dependant on the people's good will in Belarus and Poland.
Below the link to the fb of these "Brest railway station kids" The fb is in Polish but you can always use the translation device to get the idea.
https://www.facebook.com/Dzieci-z-Dworca-Brześć-307063089678726/ more details who they are visit my diary.
https://spark.adobe.com/page/TclNckR8NAJpl/

First at all, as an Italian I feel very sorry and ashamed for the third video. I'm still looking for an association which specialises in taking care of refugees and asylum seekers (apart from this group, but it's a Government organisation:http://www.k-pax.eu/page.php?area=3&idp=16 , http://www.sprar.it/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/SPRAR-Numeri-SITO-2017-02.pdf or the Caritas ), but my area is seeked by migrants and new students come all during the school year, for different reasons and from a whole range of cultural and economic origin, even when they are from the same country... The last two, a Chinese and an Algerian, came around one month ago, one to reach his family, who have lived in Italy for eighteen years and left him with the grand parents because, working all day, they couldn't look after their son. He has already finished primary school in his country, but je can't speak Italian (for now); the other one, for work reasons, seems to have never attended school, having staying all his life at home with his mother, a woman with a low level, if any, level of education. As a great-grand daughter and grand-niece of immigrants, I deeply feel their hardship, and I often share with my students the stories of my great-grand-mother, whose father bought a huge plot of land in Brazil and then left because it wasn't as moneymaking as he had thought, or the cousin of my father, who had to fly Italy, during WW2, for political persecution, or the uncles of my mother, and even my grandfather, who worked in the mines near Charleroi, in Belgium. We don't really know if we're bound to become immigrants, in need of everything or, at least, of human recognition.

During the past two years, 1.3 million people fleeing conflict and persecution have traveled through Greece in search of safety and a better life in Europe. With the closure of the Balkan borders and the implementation of the EU-Turkey agreement in March 2016, refugees can no longer continue their journeys. So, refugee population in Greece is more than 62,000 (over half of them women and children). Waiting for their ride THOUSANDS of people in the last years were hosted by a volunteere association called Baobab. Sometimes I helped the staff in someway, as many of the citizens of the neighborhood.

Here in Greece the newly arrived migrants come mainly from Syria. They are victims of the syrian war, they are refugees. They are asylum seekers. However, due to our lack of opportunities ,the majority of them do not want to stay here permanently. They desire to be promoted to other european countries such as Germany. Most of them are women and children. There are also a lot of unaccompanied children, specifically teenager boys, who need to be hosted by families according to the information of the organisation "METADRASI" I have already attended. In my area, Thessaloniki, there are approximately 2000 refugees, between them 700 children, who live in hot spots like "Diabata", "Kavalari" etc. However a lot of attempts are being done not only by the local council but also by organisations as "METADRASI" to find families to host unaccompanied children and people who want to rent their houses to refugee families.
http://metadrasi.org

They have left everything behind to start a new life. They aren’t like the adventurers that many admire that have left their homeland behind for a new adventurous life somewhere exciting and new or job transfers to get ahead on the career ladder.

As explained at the beginning of this course we must make a difference between refugee and migrant. A refugee is leaving his or her home due to a catastrophe which is life threatening. They need protection. Many migrants leave for a more comfortable life or as in my case, for love.

More stories from school:

Boy from Iraq – He, 15, came with his brother (24) to escape being killed. They are Curds. Their parents paid 30,000€ per boy to have them transported under the floorboards of a truck from Iraq to Germany. They survived. Some died on the trip. Both boys are trying hard in School. They want to be doctors and go home when all is safe.

Boy from Egypt – His father died and his mother wanted to go somewhere where there were no memories of her dead husband. She works as a professor at the local university.

Afghan Boy from Iran – He was born in a refugee camp. As the camp ran out of food and Frau Merkel said that is everyone’s responsibility to care for those in need, the family left for Germany. The family wants the children to grow up in peace and democracy without rape, kidnapping and other crimes being everyday experiences. They have three girls and do not want to go back to neither Iran nor Afghanistan.

Some of the children without parents in Germany have been delegated to foster families through the social service office responsible for juvenile’s well-being.

I live and work in Piraeus, which is the port near Athens. A lot of refugees mainly from Syria are 'trapped' in the city/country, as european borders are closed for them. I cannot tell their exact number, because after a short period of stay in tents around the port piers, they have either left for other towns/villages or remain scattered in neighbourhoods around the port. In my area there are mostly economic migrants at the moment. We are mostly worried about the state of health of those who remain (the government says they have all been vaccinated and the education opportunities of young (often unaccompanied) children.

Although the law is strict and in order to stay in Switzerland you need to find a job and get a residence permit, (according to a recent study by the Swiss state secretariat for migrants) there were 76.000 illegal immigrants living here in 2015. Most of them arrived undeclared or on tourist visas. In French and Italian speaking Switzerland the percentage rose to 78%. The large percentage came from latin America mainly for economic reasons. The vast majority are single and they live in large urban areas. Most of them intend to stay for more than ten years and they mainly work for private households. 51% are women and the majority are of working age. Many are well educated and 9 out of ten work.
http://www.ccsi.ch/
http://www.caritasge.ch

When we say "newly arrived migrants" we say nothing. I mean, we cannot generalize. Migrants have different cultural backgrounds, various degrees of instruction, different ages, etc. In Italy for instance, we have migrants coming from many different countries as well as continents. In my school there are a lot of Chinese students (I teach near Prato which is well known for its Chinese community), but also African students and Middle-Eastern students.
Each migrant is unique as he/she brings with himself/herself unique cultural values, traditions, personal experiences. In this respect, I think the last video is really touching and best describes the situation of people who decide/have to move to other countries.

1.4 Who are newly arrived migrants ?
When people move, they generally look for something, that's for sure the case of migrants too. It doesn't matter if they are addressed to as: economic workers, asylum seekers, refugees, migrants...first of all we are talking about human beings, desperately seeking for someone or something that they really need. That's why in schools we should deepen the problems of welcoming people from abroad and learn how to build a better inclusive society. The basis of peaceful coexistence among peoples, are the fundamental laws of human life.

Rossana, Brindisi- Italy I got in touch with a local organization and I learned a lot about the situation. There are few families in a hosting house and a community for 15 minors, but apart from that only males aged from 20 to 30. They spend time in the CARA and Cas that are neraby and also at the SPRAR. Some of them are refugee but mostly migrants.

In Greece, newly arrived migrants are particularly touched by the financial crisis and many of those who used to work in the informal sector, including in agriculture, have lost their jobs. The presence of a large number of migrants in the streets of Athens, many unemployed and some homeless, has led to some social and political tension. There are also many irregular migrants who are detained up to several months in various establishments, such as police stations, border guard stations and coast guard facilities, which are clearly not suitable for long-term detention. In some of the detention facilities, the migrants have limited access to toilets; some facilities have no artificial lighting so that during the winter, migrants are in the dark from early afternoon. Most of the detention facilities visited lack heating and hot water and the detainees complain about insufficient amounts and poor quality of food, lack of soap and other hygiene products, as well as insufficient clothing, shoes and blankets.
