They felt like that off task behavior distracts them too.

-In general, students thought the movie exaggerated some tech distractions.
- Next steps: similar to the movie, find middle ground (contract example) and not dictate rules without fully explaining them. Follow through is important too. Some cited summer camps where they will be leaving their phones/iPads/all tech at home. Biggest problem about no access is missing out on Snapchat. They felt restrictions were good, but written contracts were not necessary.

Whether its for themselves or for the student next to them who is off task. Two students mentioned to get rid of i pads altogether.

4.  Is it the students responsibility to pay attention in class, or is it

Teachers job to regulate it. School has given IPADS, 
teachers/administration should help students to manage it.
It is helpful for me to have reminders/help

Important that teachers monitor students being on task or not so that
students are all focused together - teacher's job is to monitor 
learning environment and make adjustments as necessary

Student's responsibility to stay on task and not be distracted because 
they are the ones who either benefit or suffer - their learning!

Both - students have to be smart enough to know when to or not to engage in which activities (self monitor) and they may need accountability to help them (teachers)

Many said it was the students' responsibility at first. Then our conversation, when discussing what the rules/procedures in school around gaming, etc should be, relied heavily upon the adults to institute and carry out rules and punishments. Students thought it is their responsibility to regulate screen use in school. They mentioned that if they made the choice to get distracted by their iPad in school then it would only directly impact themselves. Students all agreed that they would just be wasting their own time if they weren't paying attention in class. Many agreed that adults should SHOW them how to use technology appropriately, not just TELL them. Other students felt that the film portrayed a fairly realistic account of the role that technology plays in the lives of many adolescents. In terms of next steps, they felt it was both the responsibility of teachers and students to monitor student use of screen time in school. - A lot of students were honest about how distracting iPads are; said it is really hard to not be tempted by iPad distractions.
- Students felt like Blake guidelines are appropriate, but acknowledged that many people do not follow the guidelines, and try to get away with gaming/social media in class. When asked about why, students said that they felt like they could get away with it sometimes, and that even if they got caught, it wasn't a "big deal."  Students said if there were a bigger consequence (like losing recess/having detention/having iPad taken away), they are less likely to try to get away with things, but they acknowledged that this is not the case in every class.
- An overwhelming majority of students said that while iPads are great for writing assignments/projects, they prefer to have class notes on paper. Overall, the students in my advisory understood many of the advantages of the iPad in school. #8: The 'acceptable use" policy document signed at the beginning of the year - although discussed in advisory - isn't fully 'understood' by the kids.  They just sign it because they have to sign it.  They don't fully understand the possible repercussions if they violate it. They thought that it should be revisited several times over the year as a reminder or posted in the classrooms.They believe that kids should be able to play games, snapchat etc.with teacher permission during down times.Some feel that 'gestures' should be turned off on all ipads during school so that kids can't double tap/swipe to clear the screen while a teacher approaches.They are distracted by others' misuse of the ipads in class but feel funny letting teachers know about it - they haven't really noticed any real enforcement/consequences about misuse of the ipads.  Having a specific list of 'don't use this' or  consequences would help them to better understand what will happen if they play Madden during school etc.- a lot of the kids have parameters at home around screentime - in fact, many have vision issues due to screentime - watery eyes; stronger glasses; dry eyes.
