Several social networks such as Gowalla are targeted toward sharing your whereabouts with others. Many apps of today make use of our location information. Facebook is adding a feature in the summer that will make location sharing as easy as updating your status. This can be the cause of some major privacy issues which is why the topic made its way to Congress. Privacy advocates are actively pushing for lawmakers to limit how much advertisers can track users of these location-oriented services.

Advertising companies can create connections on your offline life and your online life by using your online data. Companies such as BlueKai work with advertisers to advertise to you. They use non personal information like age range, demographics, and income to determine how to advertise to you. These connections between offline and online are made with your email address that you provide an online retailer.
