I believe that 23andme is a DNA testing service that should not be used. Not only are the test results inaccurate, but it also affects a person's mentality. Lastly, the DNA could be used for purposes other than one's own.

There has been controversy going around that 23andme has produced inaccurate results. According to www.liorpatcher.WordPress.com, most of the SNPs of 23andme were incorrect, leading to odd ratios and bad results.

A person's mentality may also be affected by their results of 23andme. Knowing that one could have a BRCA gene or higher risks of cancer can send him or her into a state of depression. He or she would worry about everything he or she ate or did. This would not be worth it if one's main goal was to have a sense of relief.

Lastly, 23andme's main goal is not to use one's DNA for that person's sole benefit, but rather for the company itself. It collects DNA so that the DNA of each person is put into the database of its ancestor lineage. This information is collected unknowingly, and with each person that submits their DNA, hundreds of thousands of DNA could be used involuntarily.

I support 23andme's genetic testing DNA kit. It offers beneficial results in order for individuals to learn more about themselves. Starting at an early age, this allows others to become more aware of the risks for certain diseases, and also keeps others on track for what they should and
should not do. This is a great opportunity for preventing disease in order to live a healthier lifestyle. People have their own decision to take this test; the ones that cannot handle the truth definitely should not take it. People also should not rely on 23andme’s genetic information to be completely accurate, and should consult a physician when reviewing the results. In my opinion, the results act as a motivator to live healthier and lower risks for certain diseases. Any opportunity to improve health and avoid these risks is much better than blindly living without knowledge of one’s health. People who are well educated about their medical condition have much better chances than those who only follow the doctor’s prescriptions. This allows people to learn more about risks for medical conditions and actively participate in improving their health.

However, although I support the decision to take the test, personally, I would not take it. I do not believe that I have the capacity to handle the results because I believe that I would be worried for the future instead of making an active effort to improve my health. Especially for the incurable diseases, I would be too focused on the negative results than the positive. Knowing my own results is not good in my case because I do believe that ignorance is a bliss; knowing more about myself is not necessarily better and more beneficial because I always attempt to live healthy. I don't need a genetic test to motivate me to live healthier.

I would not take the 23andMe genetic test if given the chance. The main flaw in the company's tests is their accuracy. The 23andMe test only uses a limited number of SNPs to determine one's risk for disease, when in reality thousands of SNPs in addition to countless environmental factors affect one's risk, leading to inaccurate results. An addition, even though some of the conditions that 23andMe tests for have measures that can be taken to lower risk, many of the diseases can not be prevented, and some even have few things that can be done to lower risk, such as Alzheimer's. Learning of my risk for these diseases would only make me unnecessarily worried, as i would not be able to do anything about it. In addition, I would not even be able to be sure that those results were correct, so I might worry about a disease that I do not have. In addition, if the results were incorrect, I might be falsely unworried about a disease that I might actually be at a high risk for. I don't think that this test will be beneficial to most of the population because the people who receive this information are not trained professionals and might misinterpret the information they are given, but at the same time I do not think that they should be banned from providing these tests. 23andMe should warn people about the risks, but at the end of the day, it is each person's decision whether or not they want to take the test

After doing a decent amount of research on 23andMe and genetic testing, as well as having a discussion with my dad, I have concluded that I would not use 23andMe to get results on what my genes say about me. Yes, there are some interesting pros for getting genetic testing, like creating a family tree or finding potential relatives from the data received from 23andMe, but the cons outweigh the pros. The test isn't FDA-approved, a person would probably overreact if they get unfavorable results, genetic testing had some controversies with creating "designer babies" with clinics, and honestly, I'm personally not dying to know what my genes say about me.
