Athena is the goddess of wisdom and warfare, her counterpart is Ares, the god of war. Athena is the child of Zeus, born from Zeus swallowing Metis, the goddess of wisdom and crafty thought, in fear of her conceiving a child more powerful than he. Zeus eventually had a splitting headache, where Athena burst out of his forehead, fully-clad in armor and grown. Though it is said that she has no mother, this is the most common theory of how Athena came to be as Zeus’s favorite child. She is also known as the patroness of the famous city of Athens, from winning a competition between Poseidon where she had created the olive tree, the symbol of peace and plenty, as an offering to the citizens. She is often depicted wearing armor, a golden helmet, a shield, and holding a spear. Athena is often seen as one of the wisest, courageous, and one of the most resourceful out of the Olympians. Athena is famous for in aiding heroes on the quests like: helping Heracles on achieving his 12 labors, helping Perseus how to defeat Medusa, Odysseus on his adventures in the Odyssey, and Jason in building the Argo, his magical ship.

The first time we see Athena is when she is arguing with Zeus about Ulysses about how he is stuck on the island with the nymph goddess Calyspo. The daughter of the Atlas. She tells Zeus that he has been away from his friends too long. She questions why Zeus would have, him meet this fate. Zeus further explains that this is becuase of Posidon. Many of Athena's next few appearances are an encounter with Telemachus. When they first meet he takes her spear and clasps her hand. They then sit down to converse about the fate of Ulysses. From this she then profesizes the return of Ulysses. These interactions with Telemachus continue until she eventually tells him to prepare for his journey. Then they would start on their journey and she continues to help and guide him along his journey.

In the Odyssey, Athena has a soft spot when it comes to Odysseus and is willing to help him out during tough situations. Although she does help him in many situations, she prefers to watch him fight and prevail on his own. Athena helped Odysseus in times like his shipwreck and the mismatched battle in Book 22. Athena is very interested in Odysseus and is willing to go to many extents to see him succeed. In the Odyssey, Athena is seen as the Goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, law and justice, strategic warfare, mathematics, strength, strategy, the arts, crafts, and skill. She uses these skills to her advantage, and also attains a confident character which helps her complete tasks that benefit the well being and success of Odysseus.
