In the beginning, Tate was unfamiliar with all her new beginnings. The area was new and so were the people. Tate moved in with his brother. When she got to her apartment complex and was greeted by an older gentleman named Samuel, everyone calls him Cap. Tate became good friends with him. She was always kind to him and told him everything she could, he was a loyal friend to the new girl in the city. When Tate met Miles, he wasn't at his best. Miles was drunk and slurring his words, but she never took that has his first impression. "I stroke his hair, comforting him, even though he may not deserve it. This guy may deserve every single bit of the remorse he's feeling for whatever he did to Rachel, at least he's feeling it." She was kind to Miles and allowed him to sleep on the couch of her brother's apartment. She comforted him and was there even though she didn't know what was hurting him. Their next couple of interactions is where their chaos begins.

#1 Theme LOVE- This story deals with emotional, complicated, lovable, passionate, welcoming characters. Who struggle to love one another and accept each other's boundaries. The reason they behave like this is because Miles is afraid to love again "Maybe that boy just lost his spirit somewhere along the way." 6 years ago Miles got into an accident and was blamed for the whole thing. “My hands grip the steering wheel. Too bright.” Miles kept himself away from any sort of love and relationship. “He’s putting up his invisible shield again, guarding himself from giving to much away.” The author was showing how difficult it is to love after losing someone who meant the world to you. The ugly love becomes the only love you experience "Ugly love becomes you. Consumes you. Makes you hate it all. Makes you realize that all the beautiful parts aren’t even worth it. Without beautiful, you’ll risk feeling this. You’ll never risk feeling the ugly” Colleen Hoover was trying to get the readers to feel sympathy for Miles and his troubles. This story is shows how much love can hurt and how much loving someone can cause someone immense pain. "I suppose if a man lived through the ugliest side of love, he might never want to experience love again?"

#2 Theme-FRIENDSHIP In this story it deals with good, loyal, respectful, friends. Someone who always shows up. Who has always been there and continues to be a good friend. Miles has two best friends, Corbin Collins, and Ian Kessier. Ian has been Miles since they were eleven "We met during fifth grade." Miles and Ian met Corbin in flight school "Miles and I have known your brother since meeting him in flight school a few years back." They all have a close bond and have worked with each other for years. Now they all live in the same building they have nightly visits to Corbin's apartment. They spend a lot of time together. Having poker nights, football nights, and just spending time together on their flights. Ian has been with Miles through it all. The accident, the birth, the trauma, and helping coming to the truth of loving Tate. "Maybe that boy just lost his spirit somewhere along the way." Colleen Hoover shows in the book how much you can trust the people who care about you and how they will always be there. "I get the feeling he wants to tell me congratulations, but instead, he just hugs me."

Real World Connection

Ugly love relates to a lot of real-world connections, such as Neonatal Death, Marriage Affairs, Losing a loved one, and Guilt tripping. The reason these connect to the book is because Miles lost many people he loved. His mother and his newborn baby boy hurt him the most. His father was having an affair when Miles mom was dying. She was sick and died of cancer. "My mother passed away from cancer when I was seventeen." This book also relates to Neonatal Death, Miles son, Clayton drowned to death on the drive home from the hospital. It was on-going traffic and all of them were in the vehicle, they were giggling and so happy because they had a new person to give all their love to. They went over the bridge in the water, and Miles tried to save them; Rachel lived, and Clayton was too far gone. "Everything is water. I try to find him. I can't breathe. I try to find him. I can't breathe. I try to find him. I can't breathe. I try to find him. I want to be his hero. I can't breathe. So I just stop." Rachel blamed Miles for something he could never have controlled. "I tried to stay. I tried to love you. Every time I look at you I see him. Everything is him. If I stay, everything will always be him." The accident wasn't his fault and losing their child will never be. People lose their loved ones every day and being blamed for something you cannot change is out of your control.

Orange Juice- The reason there is a glass of orange juice is because one Tate and Miles first moments together evolve around how Tate tastes like orange juice when they kiss. "I walk past him to the refrigerator and reach for the orange juice." "You really love orange juice," he says, amused." "His fingers leave mine and move to the sides of my head, and he holds me still. I hope you taste like orange juice again" "He quickly walks back into the kitchen and grabs the orange juice. When he shoulders past me to lead the way to his bedroom, he winks." Miles loves the taste of orange juice and Tate loves drinking it. It is like an inside joke between them, but it has come to be a part of their relationship.

Captains Hat- The captains' hat is for many things. One is because Tate came from a long line of Pilots. "I smile at his words, since my brother and father are both pilots." Miles got a promotion to being the new Captain. "I didn't get captain. I've changed airlines to much." He cuts his eyes to Miles. "But Mr. Sign Me Up for More Hours over here got a nice little promotion today. Broke the company record." But the main reason is because there is a kind older gentleman named Samuel, but everyone calls him Cap. He is the captain of the elevators and is there to great everyone and be there for when the people in the building walk in. " I pushed the button for the elevator," he says. “I don't think there's an official title for my position, I do send people as high as 20 stories up in the air." He is a incredibly good friend for Tate and has helped Miles through all his troubled times.

Drowning Car-The drowning car is for when Miles and Rachel got into an accident and lost their newborn baby. The car went over the bridge and went straight into the water. "I'm wet. It's cold. My head hurts. My arm hurts. I can't see her, I can't see her, I can't see her, I can't see him. Silence." Miles had no sight on anyone or anything. Miles lost many things in this accident his child, his first love, his life, and the ability to love someone or to be loved by another. The fear of hurting someone now haunts him.

1. "RACHEL. RACHEL. RACHEL."-Miles Archer. When Miles and his new family got into an accident. The only words Miles was screaming were "RACHEL. RACHEL. RACHEL." and "CLAYTON. CLAYTON. CLAYTON." Miles called out these names because they were the names of his newborn baby boy and the mother of his child. This quote is important because it shows how much pain Miles went through just to try and save his family, but he failed and was blamed for it all.

2. "Never ask about my past, and never expect a future."-Miles Archer. When Miles and Tate first came up with their agreement to only have sex. Miles created these rules that Tate had to follow. "Never ask about my past, and never expect a future." Tate struggled most of the time trying to not break the rules, and respecting Miles boundaries as much as possible. But she wanted to know everything about this guy, and she broke them. The reason this quote is important is because it shows how hard Miles tried to keep his past a secret because he didn't want everyone to treat him so fragile and make him feel weak.

3. "It's ugly. It's over."-Tate Collins. Tate and Miles were in a rough patch in their agreement. They were both falling in love with each other but would not admit it. Miles was drunk and emotional. He just wanted all the pain to go away. So, Tate allowed him to use her for sex in that moment and he said the wrong name. "Oh my god Rachel." Miles knew what he did wrong and tried to stop but Tate didn't want to leave it like that, so when they finished things got ugly and everything was over. When they hadn't seen each other for a couple of months since that day. This quote is important because it shows one of the uglier sides of the story when things are not always perfect.

In the middle, Tate became concerned with Miles. She is more curious about his life, such as where he is from, what his past was like, and where his future might end up. They became more involved with each other physically, but Tate wanted to know more. Miles doesn't want Tate to know all about him. The reason Miles sent rules is because he doesn't want to make her feel empathetic towards him. Tate broke Miles' rules which hurt them both. Tate genuinely likes Miles and just wants him to be open about his emotions. "Yes, Miles. You're right. I am. Because I like you, and I know you like me, and when we're together, it's phenomenal, so that's what normal people do. When they find someone they're compatible with, they open up to them. They let them in. They want to be with them. They don't fuck them against their kitchen table and then walk away and make they feel like complete shit." Tate started feeling more than just being attracted to him. She is falling in love with him, and she knows he is too, but he won't admit it which is making her weak.

In the end, Tate felt relieved and loved. Since their separation Miles and Tate have both thought a lot about their feelings and how they affected each other. Miles went to see Rachel after 6 years, and he finally felt freer from the pain he had been feeling for many years. He finally opened about all his life experiences, losing his mother, child and first love. Miles was suffering in silence and was scared to speak out. He was scared to love and scared to let go of what he almost had. Miles came back and said "Tate," he whispers. "I miss you." Tate felt relieved that she was not the reason Miles didn't want to love her. They can finally now have a life together. That's what they did. "Will you break rule number two with me, Tate? Because I really want to marry you." They had a beautiful daughter and named her Sam after Cap. "It's beautiful moments like these that make up for the ugly love."
