U-2 Spy Plane incident

On May 1, 1960 an American spy plane was shot down by a USSR air space. This led to a meeting with Dwight D. Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev. This was embarrassing for the United States, so they didn't want to admit it. However, the Russians forced them to admit that it wasn't and accident. They captured the captain and parts of the plane. Khrushchev wanted an apology from Eisenhower, but he refused. This made things tense for the two nations.

The H-Bomb-When did each nation get it and how is it different than the A-Bomb

U.S.- November 1, 1952
Russia- August 12, 1953

The hydrogen bomb is way more powerful than the atomic bomb. It is 1,000 times more powerful. The overall destruction of the bomb is more severe.
According to Edward Morse, a professor of nuclear engineering , “With the [atomic] bomb we dropped in Nagasaki, it killed everybody within a mile radius,” Morse told TIME on Friday, adding that a hydrogen bomb’s reach would be closer to 5 or 10 miles. “In other words, you kill more people,” he said".

The A-bomb goes through nuclear fission (when the nucleus of an atom is split and energy is released), but an H-bomb relies on nuclear fusion (where two nuclei collide at a high speed to form a new nucleus). Nuclear fusion is more powerful because when the atoms collide at a high speed it splits many atoms at the same time.

Joseph McCarthy and McCarthyism

Joseph McCarthy was a Republican Senator and he claimed that Communist were overthrowing the government. At first, people would agree with him, but soon people realized that he was producing unsupported attacks on suspected communists. This is how the idea of McCarthyism came to life. There were people in favor of him (Republicans), but others thought he was just violating people rights. I believe the final straw for the American people was when he tried to accuse the army without evidence.

The second spy case during this red scare involved an American couple. Julius worked as a civil engineer in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, so it made it easy to disclose information to the Soviet Union. Ethel's brother, David Greenglass, was involved in the Manhattan Project, so he provided secret information about the American bomb. They tried to keep their innocence, but they were convicted on March 1951. This couple was convicted of espionage and they were executed on June 19, 1953.

Alger Hiss was an official of the State Department and he was accused for spying for the Soviet Union. He tried to portray that he was innocent throughout his whole case. However, an ex-communist, Whittaker Chambers, exposed him and provided the “Pumpkin Papers” that Hiss would give him. They were called pumpkin papers because many of the time spies would pass around information by putting it in pumpkins in pumpkin patches. At the end, Hiss could not be tried for treason because the statute of limitations had run out, but he was charged with two counts of perjury.

These were 10 individuals in the entertainment business that refused to provide any information on their communistic affiliations. The consequences for their actions resulted in them being blacklisted, being fined $1,000, and being sentenced to up to a year in prison. This meant that many of them were shunned from the film industry and it became extremely hard for them to get jobs. There was also a documentary called "The Hollywood Ten" that highlighted the speeches of the members of the Hollywood Ten and how they criticized the blacklisting tactic.

Set up in 1947, this committee was made to investigate anyone that proposed any communist ideas, specifically it concentrated on the movie industry and the communist ideas being brought up in Hollywood. This organization became very popular during this time in history because everyone was terrified of the "red scare". However, there were others that said that it violated their expressive rights. Among all the celebrities that would be accused of communistic behavior, there would be some that would refuse to testify which would lead them into more trouble.
