Emily Dickinson was a 19th century poet who was very introverted and mysterious. She was born in 1838 in Massachusetts. A lot of her poems were based around different ideas of death. This included her view on immortality. She spent most of her time isolated in her room instead of socializing with others. Although she only published a few poems, after Emily's death in 1886, her sister found nearly 1800 poems hidden away in Emily's room. Emily had her own way of writing which included lots of dashes for punctuation and odd repeating symbols which gave her poems the ability to have deeper meanings. Aside from writing about her main topics, she also had an interest in writing love letters to her suspected lover who became her brother-in-law so they could be closer.

The tone of the poem is hopeless. In the poem this is quoted in the first sentence in the second stanza "so huge, so hopeless to conceive as these that twice befell." The poem is ironic because she doesn't seem to care or show any fear of death but usually any other person would be terrified of death.

Emily uses a paradox at the end "parting is all we know of heaven, and all we need of hell." These contribute to the meaning, because it describes that she'll remember who people are based off of what they did while they were alive.

6. The theme of the poem "My life closed twice before its close", is the grief of losing someone close to you. Emily lost her parents and two male older friends around the same time. This is why in the line, "My life closed twice before its close", her life "closed" twice. What she is really talking about, is the loss of her friends and then her parents. This supports the theme because it shows how hurt she was at the time. Emily's life shut down not once, but twice. Ultimately, the theme of this poem is the grief that comes with losing people you love.

The main symbols in the poem, are death and immortality. Many of Emily's poems were surrounded by death including this one. The symbol death is displayed in the text where it says, "Parting is all we know of heaven,
And all we need of hell." Emily lost people she loved, so now she has to overcome and part with their deaths. Emily talks about immortality when she says, "If immortality unveil a third event to me". Here she is saying that without immortality her life will close a third time, but if it does exist, she will see her loved ones again. This poem revolves around death and immortality. These symbols are common in certain writing pieces and universally used.
