There is not a female equivalent phrase like "girls will be girls". Unfair gender roles and expectations that hinder women have been forced onto women since childhood. Many women can recall that throughout childhood, they constantly cleaned up messes they did not create and succumb to unfair expectations about how a "lady" should act. 
Cyndi Lauper is no different to these other young women. In the song, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", we hear first hand how disappointed Cyndi's parents are in her for not living a traditional lifestyle. "I come home in the mornin
 light. My mother says, 'When you gonna live your life right?'" This quote is a direct representation of a parent that disapproves of a young woman's lifestyle and passively aggressively shames her. What does it mean to "live your life right"? In the 1980's, the nuclear family was still popular. Families mainly consisted of a working father, mother that takes care of the home, and children. Gender roles were still prevalent in this era. Cyndi's mother clearly disapproves of her staying out late, and insinuates wishing her to start a family and take care of a home. Cyndi rejects this with saying, "Girls they wanna have fun."
Another lyric that stands out is when Cyndi sings, "Some boys take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest o' the world. I wanna be the one to walk in the sun. Oh girls, they wanna have fun." As mentioned previously, gender roles require a woman to marry and stay home with her children. When put into a situation like this, women's lives may become mundane and repetitive if not down right abusive in the worst case scenario. Cyndi rejects this by mentioning walking in the sun... or choosing her own path of light.
Feminism allows women choice and direction over their own lives. I like the song because it is catchy, very classic, and has a message that I agree with. I agree with the lyrics and I think the execution of the lyrics are well done. The message is there but it is not so obvious enough to turn off a casual listener or cause controversy.
