Igbo: One of Nigeria's Largest Ethnic Groups

Igbo (sometimes referred to as the Ibo) is one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. About 27 million Igbo can be located near high plains and along the sultry valleys, rivers, and forests. Most of the Igbo in Nigeria harvest crops like cassava or taro, but they harvest yams the most.

In the 1400's, many of the Igbo were sent off to slave traders and were traveled throughout the region. After the Untied Kingdom gained control of Nigeria in the 1960, most of the Igbo became Christians, whilst other Igbo stuck to their original roots. These independent Igbo supported a new republic called Biafra and went out into a civil war with Nigeria, lasting up to 1970, where Biafara surrendered.

Other than Igbo, Christianity and Islam are two of the most popular religions in Nigeria, both of which are nearly the same in terms of population. Most Nigerian citizens converted to Christianity due to the United Kingdom's control over Nigeria and the other citizens converted to Islam due to nearby countries in the north. Only about 5% of the population is non-religious.

Nigeria's DTM Stage

Based on Nigeria's population pyramid, Nigeria is a Stage 1 country of the DTM. In this stage, the birth rate is higher than the death rate, causing the population to increase. The reason Nigeria is at the stage is it at is caused by numerous reasons.

For instance, 86.9 million Nigerian citizens live in poverty, nearly equivalent to 50% of it's population, causing most of it's citizens to die early. 38% of the population is uneducated, not being able to earn enough income from jobs. Nigeria is known as a medium-income country, meaning that Nigeria doesn't have enough money to solve the poverty rate, but isn't entirely poor. 85% of Nigerian citizens live in rural areas, meaning that most of the Nigerians are farmers, which generate low income. In Nigeria, men overpopulate women in the country, which could increase the poverty rate in Nigeria due to the low opportunity rate for Nigeria.
