La banda fue formada en 2009 por el vocalista Tyler Joseph junto a los ex miembros Nick Thomas y Chris Salih, quienes se retiraron en 2011. Actualmente está conformada por el cantante, compositor y pianista Tyler Joseph y el baterista Josh Dun. Hace ya un tiempo que Josh recogió un premio de APMA en Cleveland e hizo una referencia que muchos fans han tomado como una pista: “Tyler wishes he could be here, but he’s actually severing ties with dema“. Y la palabra dema significa “torre de silencio”.

Más tarde, en su web quedó el mensaje oculto que revelaba las palabras “luz” y “eco”
