2. The illustrations are supportive and enhance the meaning of the book.
3. Illustrations add to the development of the characters.
4. The mood and tone are spoken in the illustrations.
5. Physical attributes are important:
  • Cover-when you take off the book jacket, does the hard cover match?
  • End papers-do the end papers match the book or are they plain
  • Title page-does it provide information about the text?
  • Binding-is it sturdy to withhold many readings ( library binding will make the book last longer)
  • Size/spacing of the pictures
  • Text placement, font, and typeface
  • Spine-does it have the title and author on it?
  • Gutter-do the pages flow together?
  • Quality paper-is it sturdy paper so that it can last?
6. Depend on quality reviews written by educators and well-trained librarians.
