Born William Henry Webb, know as Chick Webb was and American jazz ad swing music drummer. Born in Baltimore, he suffered from tuberculosis of the spine. He worked as a newspaper boy to save enough money to buy drums and he first played professionally at age 11. At the age of 17 he move to New York City and began leading his own band in Harlem. His band became the house band at the Savoy Ballroom. He became one of the best-regarded band leader and drummers of the new “Swing” style. Drumming legend Buddy Rich cited Webb’s technique and performances as heavily influential on his own drumming and referred to Webb as “the daddy of them all.” At the Savory in “Battle of the Bands” Chicks often won and was deemed “King of Swing.”

Never misses
Making a heaven for two
With a tender
Sweet surrender
Coming from someone like you

Your perfection
To affection
Creates a perfect design
Love has bound us
Joy has found us
Planning a future divine

No indecision
I know that my vision
Is clear
When you are near
No need for sunlight
For you are the one light
I see
So real to me

Love and kisses
That's what bliss is
Lighting whatever you do
Whole completeness
Blessed sweetness
Coming from someone like you

What can I do
Now that you say we're through?
I'm left with the blues in my heart.

How can I smile
What can I do
Now that you say we're through?
You left me with the blues in my heart!
How can I smile?
Nothing in life seems worthwhile;
You left me with the blues in my heart!

How can I live?
What is there life can give
As long as we're apart?
How can I go on,
Knowing that you have gone?
You left me with the blues in my heart!

How can I live?
What is there life can give
As long as we're apart?
How can I go on,
Knowing that you have gone?
You left me with the blues in my heart!

I'm so unhappy, I don't know what to do,
The words you've spoken have left me sad and blue!
You left me,
You left me with the blues in my heart!

Beginning from 1917 and ending around 1935, the Harlem Renaissance, also known as the New Negro Movement, was found to be the start of African American culture, literature, music, and art to flourish all over America. Many factors led to the start of this new time period. One of which was when blacks began migrating to the northern parts of America in search of opportunity and equality. Although the north was seen as a safe haven for blacks escaping the Jim Crow Laws, they still faced harsh racism and segregation, but that didn't stop them from frolicking the streets and bringing their smooth, calming music, dances, and art in. During this time period, jazz was introduced, as well as black magazines and books that fought for equality for all. The Harlem Renaissance can be seen as a difficult time, but all while seen as a time where blacks can move about with ease as well as even publish their own writings, which was considered a big change for literature overall within a predominantly white community. Many Harlem Renaissance artists and writers had broken the barriers of segregation and inspired communities to become one entirety. However, the Harlem Renaissance had ended right around the time the Great Depression occurred. But even though it lasted a short while, it still had long lasting effects on the literature, art, and music that will soon be created later on.

The Great Gatsby captured the essence of the 1920s. And since the Harlem Renaissance's time period was the 1920s, it most likely was part of the book. The culture, art, music, and fashion brought to the 1920s by the Harlem Renaissance affected how literature was written and how social classes were organized.
