Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

Nominated by Grace B.I nominate Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. I started reading this but never finished it. I regret doing so because I really enjoyed it and I’m not completely sure why I stopped. This autobiography tells the story of a young, mysterious, and restless boy who never exactly fit in. The stories Trevor tells are HILARIOUS from pooping in the middle of the living room to having the whole school cheer for him because he didn’t get detention that day, we experience the happiness and humor but also the sadness and fear he lived through. He teaches us the impact of the small details in life and brings to realization how much the world has to offer. 10/10 recommend. For a more in depth summary you can click https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/537515/born-a-crime-by-trevor-noah/9780399588198/teachers-guide/#:~:text=Born%20a%20Crime%20is%20the,was%20never%20supposed%20to%20exist.
I will add, this is one of my favorite books of all time, led to one of the most memorable book projects Ive seen in 30 years of teaching. Good pick!!!!

I would like to nominate purple hibiscus because the book is about a girl named Kambili and her sibling who live a "privileged" but "suffocating" life because of their father (goodreads has a summary). They move to their aunts, which is a much more warm and welcoming environment and then move back home and family issues arise.
I am really curious to see where this book goes and to see how the characters make this adjustment.

Auri Ronda- The Killing Moon

This is a book by N.K.Jemisin, and I've never actually read any of her work, but I know people who like her books. The Killing Moon sounds like it would be really interesting. It has a lot of good reviews on goodreads.com, and I checked out the sequel by accident. It's fantasy, and it's set in a world where priests of the dream goddess (they're called "Gatherers") go into people's dreams and use the magic in their minds for "justice." But then one of these people starts murdering people in the dream godess's name, and a Gatherer who's the protagonist has to protect someone he was sent to kill.
Quick note: I'm working on checking the availability of copies of this. It might not work as book #1 for a book group, and if not we could use it for book #2.

Aden Habtemariam- Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

I would like to recommend this book because it talks about how race and racism is shut down by white people who have not experienced it, and would usually just brush it off because they aren't affected by it. This is mostly about the author's experiences with racism in Britain and covers issues from eradicated black history to white privilege, the fallacy of 'meritocracy' to whitewashing feminism, and the inextricable link between class and race. I haven't really been able to finish since I started it quite recently but from what I have read so far it is really good and if you don't know a lot about how it feels to face racism, then you should give this a try.

I've always been interested in Malcolm X, as a political figure and a radical figure. There's a lot of misinformation/misconceptions about Malcolm X, and I've realized just how little I know about who he was and what he actually did, so I thought this would be an interesting read.
