Conscious Inclusion: Social platforms for new students to get involved before the school year, student-to-student mentorship programs, or “new students” policies in clubs

Campus leadership and club leaders need to be involved. It’s important to identify new students each year who can help to create new ideas on how to engage

People with physical disabilities don’t have enough accessibility on campus.

POC/underrepresented students feel a lack of support from faculty members and feel tokenized at times by Central’s community. They lack a sense of belonging, leading to the lack of retention of POC

Faculty and staff don’t understand the needs of BIPOC students and are often not BIPOC themselves, therefore feel less attached to the need for DEI. We have also lost many of the positions pertaining to DEI practices on campus or have too many staff members that would be interested in this overloaded with other priorities

Several resolutions

1. Study groups or low-commitment groups to cultivate a sense of belonging between allies and BIPOC students (brave haven)

2. Programming using outside individuals and professionals to speak or run events, lessening the load on BIPOC students

3. Bring back BIPOC+ coalition at the start of the year (speed dating concept with other students, student leaders, faculty members)

Lack of diversity amongst clubs on campus

This occurs because there’s a lack of collaboration between clubs. Feels very secluded

Have different clubs collaborate more to increase diversity in events

Club leaders need to communicate and collaborate more in order for clubs to feel more inclusive and not as secluded

Race

It occurs throughout the year digitally and in person

It often happens from not having experience being around other races. A lot of the time, people make jokes about things that either don’t effect them or don’t pertain to their own self.

Make people more aware about how the jokes they are making do effect people even if they don’t effect you. If you see something, say something.

Everyone needs to be involved. Inclusion is needed on and off campus.

Physical disability

When your around or see someone from that group.

It occurs because they appear different on the outside even though that ultimately doesn’t define who the person is.

Conscious inclusion: Making sure that if you’re meeting with them that it’s somewhere they can access. Advocating for more accessibility on campus & in public places. Have a welcoming & open mind to their story.

Everyone who interacts with these people. Student leaders, student development, SSS, faculty, & who designs the buildings on campus.

Gender expectations often impact what majors & careers students pursue.

This happens all of the time, but specifically during career exploration fairs and potentially major declaration day.

This happens due to societal pressure, historical patterns, and lack of representation in male or female-dominated fields.

For conscious inclusion at Central, we could ensure equal or even opposite representation at booths/tabling. For example, we could highlight men in the education department and women in STEM.

These forms of inclusion will involve professors, academic deans, club leaders, and the general student body.

Not all students have equal access to dorms, halls, and tmk.

Everyday

Elevators aren'teasily accessible or aren't working. The budget goes elsewhere

Advocate for those that are disabled. Talk and find solutions to make it accessible. Support organizations that help those with disabilities

Students leaders and college staff

Comparing people who are skinny vs fat.

It usually can be seen commonly on social media, in the gym, and common spaces.

Insecurities on self being reflected outwards, people being used to having it be a "joke", and unconscious/concious biases.

The ways we can combat this and try to be inclusive is acknowledge the issue head on. Working to give out information to inform people about eating disorders and how self image plays into overall health.

It is a group effort at the end of the day, but for college it can be encouraged for leaders (SOS/RAs/student development) to make programs/information sheets to encourage positive interactions and open thinking.
