We were arriving onto Ellis Island and I could smell the fresh air. We then arrived at the island and all of us got off we were quite nervous because our English was not very good and we were given medical examinations and vaccinations by Americans. They were doing this to make sure they would not get sick. After we passed our medical examinations we then had to be interrogated but most of the questions were easy questions. Most people had passed the test including me. We then had to make some changes like changing to a new currency and new names. After that I was heading off to NY and able to live my new American life.

Many of our names were changed since it was too hard to say or spell, and we would often get vaccinations just to make sure we won't get sick. I remember a time in 1897 when there was a huge fire that burned many buildings on the Island. I'm now done with the processing and it's now my time to live My American Dream.

When I reached Ellis Island there was a lot of people. There was a hospital for sick people. There was a lot of people that came from different backgrounds. The government was worried that we would bring diseases to the country. So they gave us medical examinations while still on the ships. We also received vaccinations to make sure that we would not get sick. I could not speak English so it was very hard for me, I had trouble understanding what I was supposed to do and worried that I would be sent back to my home country. The Medical officers gave us more physical examinations at Ellis Island. After I pass the medical exams, I had to answer 29 questions. An interpreter who my language helped me answer the questions. Most were easy to answer, like my name, age, and the country I was from. My name was changed because it was too difficult for the workers to say. After all the tests and changes I was able to go to the state I wanted to live in. And finally got to lived the American dream!

I arrived at Ellis Island after a long ferry ride. I did not understand many of the American languages. But I knew I was one of the only Europeans who did not have any sickness. When I saw people get processed some succeeded but some failed and those who failed got sent back. I was very afraid and nervous but I had a very helpful interpreter who actually answered most of my questions. I almost got some questions wrong like my name because I had to go by a fake identity. I answered all 38 questions and was examined for any diseases and didn't have any. I rode a boat to New York City and saw towers taller than the sky it was beautiful. Then I remembered most of my family but realized they had died coming here, so I made a promise to them I would live a good life in America. That is my story

I guess my name before was to difficult to say because they gave me a new one. Also they made me take a vaccine so that me and others don't get sick. When I entered the interrogation room there was an interpreter there to help with communication. But after it was all said and done i started my journey through the United states

There they took more physical examinations. After, they questioned me but I didn't know any English, luckily they had an interpreter. They gave 29 very simple questions like my name and age. They decided to change my name to Kathy since they couldn't pronounce Katherine. I passed the interrogation. they then converted my euros into dollars and finally sent me on my way to the US.
- Thienan

At the time I didn't understand any English and I didn't know how to speak it so when they vaccinated me I didn't know what was going on. They had given me a new name so people wouldn't know my real name. Me and my family had come to the U.S because my parents needed to get better jobs to provide money to take care of us. Once I have gotten older I got a job to help my parents provide for me and my siblings. That is why we came to the U.S.

Entering Ellis Island was a challenging experience for me. I could not speak English very well so, therefore, it was crucial because of that I had people translate words for me. I was getting examined for any medical problems, vaccinated, and things of that nature. I was made to make another name to something short because my name wasn't ¨easy to understand ¨.

I arrived at Ellis Island New York with my family. And it was very hard cause didn't speak much English. It was also scary cause we might have to slit up and we didn't want to do that. My family and I had to get examed physically and medically we also got vaccinated. When we were done we were all together and happy in New York.

Today i just arrived at Ellis island with my family. We were all so scared because it was our first time being away from home. I think we were all scared when it was time to answer questions because we don't know much English. We all had to change our names because it was apparently too hard to pronounce.

Thankfully, there were people translating the words so I could understand. I was nervous because I was being tested in medical and had to get vaccinated.

going to Ellis island was a scary time. The way I was there I saw a lot of people there but when they would come up and talk to me I would not know what to say to them I did not speak English.
