Pros:

–          Gaming Consoles have standards for several gaming platforms. Wii, which is said to be weakest console has no standard for multiplatform games as it is ranked lower than two other consoles including Xbox 360 and PS3

–          Console exclusives are not available on PC

–          No need to install games on gaming consoles, just plug and play the games

Cons:

–          Usually consoles are specifically for one and only developer, i.e. one cannot play the game of PS3 on Wii controller. You must make sure that the game caste is supported on that platform

–          You may experience bad performance in a game which is ported from another console or PC

–          Consoles usually don’t play the game to its full potential


Hand Held:
Pros:

–          As I mentioned earlier, the biggest advantage of handheld gaming console is that they are portable, and you can bring them anywhere with ease.

Cons:

–          Handheld gaming consoles are generation or two behind, these consoles haven’t latest technology and upgrades

–          Poor battery life is the biggest problem

–          Uncomfortable control is yet another negative point that is associated with handheld gaming console

37.7% of respondents have never owned a handheld game console (e.g., Gameboy, Sony PSP), representing the 7th largest untapped market of any of the 16 devices studied, according to a Researchscape survey of 1,000 consumers.16.7% of respondents were “very interested” or “extremely interested” in purchasing a handheld game console. People interested in handheld game consoles are most likely to also be interested in video game consoles (0.508 correlation), digital photo frames (0.360 correlation) and portable DVD players (0.339 correlation).

Handheld game consoles are a category that doesn’t benefit much from device substitution: only 1.9% of respondents would replace a broken device from a different category (typically, a portable DVD player, selected by 0.9%) with a handheld game console.

1.5% of respondents without a handheld game console said it was the device they didn’t own that they were most interested in purchasing. Of all respondents, 1.1% identified handheld game consoles as the device they were most interested in purchasing, the 5th lowest interest level. Respondents were interested in purchasing consoles for use during long trips, attracted to the functionality of new models or anticipating a better gaming experience than offered by cell phones.

What I love about the vita is that it has the power to offer both. For example: uncharted (very heavy on story and cut scenes. console experience) vs sound shapes ( a fun looking game with emphasis on creating short levels with music. portable experience)


Some people are used to handheld gaming being only a small portion of their gaming experiance, so they get used to playing smaller games. So when they see how similar the games look or feel to bigger gaming consoles it freaks them out and they don't like it when it reality it's just the nature of technology. It has always been inevitable that dedicated handheld devices where going to get more features and power, so all i see when people complain are people who are out of their comfort zone and choose to defend themsevles by saying that they already have a home console hence said handheld is pointless.
