"One day when we had come to a stop, a worker took a piece of bread out of his bag and threw it into a wagon. There was a stampede. Dozens of starving men fought desperately over a few crumbs. The worker watched the spectacle with great interest" (Pg.101). To me this tied into the theme because if he were to try and go for the bread he would have been killed, trampled, ect. and for those other people they got caught up they were too weak and they let there actions control them which is why they got killed.

"We marched. Gates opened and closed. We continued to
march between the barbed wire. At every step, white signs with
black skulls looked down on us. The inscription: WARNING! DANGER
OF DEATH. What irony. Was there here a single place where
one was not in danger of death?" (Pg. 40). Before this he was warned multiply times and he ignored them. and so because of that his life changed for the worse.

This ties in because He ended up eating his dads food which ended up killing his dad and that is now something he has to live with for the rest of life.
