Introduction to the Element:

I chose Element 16: Using Homework. This element describes the appropriate ways to use homework to reinforce skills taught in the classroom. If uses appropriately, homework can deepen understanding and give students the opportunity to learn the specific skill from another viewpoint. We do not all learn the same way and sometimes students need to hear it again from a parent or another adult to help reinforce their learning.

The strategies listed under this element include:
1. Preview Homework- Before beginning a new lesson in class give students an opportunity to "preview" what they are going to be learning about that day. Give them a chance to connect to real-life experiences before teaching the skill.

2. Homework to deepen knowledge- In this strategy, students are challenged to deepen their understanding of a topic using higher order thinking skills (Magana & Marzano, 2014). With this strategy students MUST understand the topic completely to complete homework on this level.

3. Homework to practice a process or skill- This type of homework is assigned AFTER students can work independently in class. This strategy involves assigning a procedure with multi-steps.

How technology can enhance each strategy

1. Preview Homework- To enhance with technology, Magana & Marzano recommend creating short videos or screencasting software to make a short video of the new content students will be learning about before beginning the lesson.
2. Homework to deepen knowledge- One thing the author suggested for this strategy is online scavenger hunts in which students use skills such as: compare/contrast, evaluate, classify, etc. (Magana & Marzano, 2014).
3. Homework to practice a process or skill- According to our book you can enhance this strategy using technology by having students record themselves carrying out the steps of the problem. Then they could upload and share the video (Magana & Marzano, 2014).

Implementation tips for each strategy

1. Preview homework- to implement this strategy I would like to have students create the videos. This would really engage students to learn from their peers. It would also help the students who are featured in the video deepen their understanding of the topic, so you could strategically pick struggling students to help with this.
2. To implement this strategy I could use it during one of my Social Studies units in which we are writing about our town. Students could take pictures of the featured buildings and classify/compare/contrast differences online. The book also recommends using Pinterest to arrange such collages (Magana & Marzano, 2014).
3. One way to implement this strategy would be during my rounding unit we have specific steps the students must say to themselves because they tend to really struggle. I could have them video themselves completing a rounding problem as they are saying the steps to solve the problem.
