You might think that child labour is “old fashioned” and it has stopped by now. But ,did you know that H&M and Nike use child labour? It’s true! Really famous stores use child labour even if you least expect it to. It’s not just these stores. It’s happening worldwide. Children are working to make us shoes and clothes. They miss out on education just to work. Research shows most victims of child labour are aged between 5 - 15. Even before they are fully grown adults. I think that child labour should be stopped, because the cycle continues through the child’s family, it causes children to leave their family, and most importantly it causes adult unemployment.

One reason why child labour should be banned is because the cycle will continue. The article “Child Labour” on scholastic.com says the cycle continues through a child’s family. What I mean by this is when children work they never get paid enough. If they grow up and have children, they won’t have enough money to pay for education. The kid missed out on education as a child because the have to work. They won’t have a good university. Consequently, that child will have a low paying job. See? This will keep on happening. Generations will pass by, just because that ONE child had to work. The article doesn’t really say this, but I think one cause of child labour is poverty. In particular, poor families will sell off their children for money ,because they can’t feed themselves. While skeptics may think poor families have to do this to give their children a better life, get this: After the children are sold off, they will be forced to work in unsanitary conditions, not have enough food, miss out on education, not have proper healthcare, and they will be deprived of their own rights. Your kids are better off with you than sold off.

Another reason why child labour should be stopped is because it causes kids to leave behind everything. I asked Zarmeena an 8 year old “How would you feel if you had to leave your family to work in unhealthy conditions”? She replied by saying “I wouldn’t want to and I’d be miserable”. Little children don’t want to work, but some are forced to. If they don’t want to, why should they? It’s their own choice. The article “Child Protection From Violence Exploitation and Abuse” on unicef.org says “Millions of children around the world are trapped in child labour depriving them of their own childhood, their health , and education”. Children have to leave everything behind to work. They DONT even have a choice! Consequently, since the kids are uneducated they won’t get a good job. In particular, careeraddict.com says H&M, Hershey’s, apple, and nestle follow unethical practices such as child labour. It’s very common, yet so threatening. It needs to stop!

Last but not least, child labour causes adult unemployment in people aged 16 and older. You might wonder why children work instead of adults. The article “Causes and Consequences Of Child Labour in Ethiopia” on ill.org says childbren are easier to exploit than adults. They don’t demand workers rights, because they don’t know that they’re being exploited. People at work also abuse kids. From working in unhealthy conditions kids can get burns, cuts ,and bruises. They can also feel emotional or physical neglect. Emotional neglect is hopelessness and physical neglect is not enough food, or not proper medical treatment. Again, this all happens because children are easier to exploit and aren’t treated fairly. One school of thought might think it is fair because the kids get paid, while this may be true it is also true that they get paid very little and have to work much more than they are paid. The small quantity of money they are paid isn’t even enough for a living! Have you ever thought how it ruins THEIR future just to make YOUR shoes. They miss on education and other privileges children should have. This should be stopped. The child in this picture is carrying lots of wood. Child labour is a common practice in countries like Cameroon.

To wrap things up, child labour continues through the family of a child, it make sure children leave everything behind, and most importantly it causes adult unemployment. Do you think this is really worth it? How can we help? By not buying from or supporting companies that follow practices like child labour. We can take slow steps to end child labour ; one day it’ll stop! Also, all the sources used are linked below.
