My first impressions about "activism"

What I find interesting is that activism is all about people caring enough to try and make things better. It’s exciting to think about how small actions can add up to big changes—like people coming together to help others or protect the planet.

What feels difficult is figuring out the best ways to make a real difference. Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start, or if what you do will actually matter.

Talking about activism isn’t totally unusual in my country. There are groups working on things like helping animals or making cities cleaner, so it’s a topic that comes up now and then.

Studying it feels meaningful. It makes me think more about the world around me and how I can be part of solving problems, not just watching them.

The issues that speak to me most are those about fairness—making sure everyone gets a chance, no matter who they are—and taking care of nature. These feel close to everyday life.

I’ve never been in a demonstration, but I’ve seen protest art online—like posters with strong messages about saving the earth. It’s powerful how art can say so much without words.

However, through the study of AI courses and the guidance of the teachers, I have come to understand that we should use AI correctly to assist in my understanding rather than to help me complete my tasks. Although I am not very proficient in using it, I will try my best to utilize it.

Sam Cooke – A Change Is Gonna Come: A Short Reflection

Sam Cooke was a famous soul singer in the 1950s–60s, known for hits like You Send Me. He was also a trailblazer, being one of the first Black artists to own his record label (Biography.com, 2023).

The Civil Rights Movement was a fight for equal rights for Black Americans from the 1950s to 1960s, pushing back against segregation and unfair treatment (History.com, 2021).

I liked the song—it’s powerful. Cooke’s voice feels full of both pain and hope, which made me feel moved. The message is simple: change will happen, even when things are hard. That’s why it mattered for the movement—people found courage in it.

A modern song like it is Kendrick Lamar’s Alright, which became important for Black Lives Matter.

Bibliography

	•	Biography.com.

We did a lecture, podcast chat, and documentary. I took notes with bullets, a mind map, and quick writing.

Feelings

Calm during the lecture. Stressed with the documentary—I couldn’t write fast enough. Nice talking in the group, even if I missed things.

Evaluation

Good: Bullets and mind maps worked.

Hard: Fast documentary—messy notes, missed stuff. Forgot to note where a fact came from.

Analysis

Lectures are easy because they’re simple. Documentary was hard—watching and listening at once is tricky.

Conclusion

I’m okay with simple listening, but need better ways to take fast notes.

Action Plan

Next week, I’ll use short symbols (like “&” for “and”) to write quicker. I’ll note sources right away too.

At first, I thought this project was quite interesting, at least more interesting than the sustainable projects. Sustainable projects are rarely related to art, while the activism projects can be related to art. But later I encountered difficulties. I couldn't decide on my project. Eventually, I chose a topic about the impact of climate on the environment. Although it wasn't something I particularly liked, I felt that this project was at least easy to describe. For this week's class, I seemed a bit scattered. Sometimes I couldn't concentrate. I often felt very tired and wished it could end quickly, but at the same time I cared about my final score.

My initial idea for the campus activism art piece is a large interactive comic wall.

In terms of art form, it belongs to a comic installation that combines interactive elements. I will draw a series of comic stories on the wall about "hidden discrimination" on campus, which are based on real student experiences, such as ignored opinions in group assignments and unintentional offenses due to appearance. Please provide the text you want to be translated.

To attract other students to participate, the comic wall will reserve blank comic panels. Students can draw similar situations they have encountered on sticky notes and stick them up, or write down their feelings or thoughts beside existing comics. I will also set up several "choice branch" comic scenarios, for example, the ending of a certain comic has different development directions. Students can vote to choose the subsequent plot, and I will continue to draw based on the voting results.

Talking about the "Migrant Mother" photo and video in class taught me some important things. The photographer, Dorothea Lange, thought a lot about her work. She said the photo helped people see how hard migrant workers’ lives were, but it also made the woman in the picture just a symbol of poverty, not a real person.

This shows she used critical thinking. She didn’t just take the photo and forget it. She thought about how it affected the woman and others.

This connects to our course because, as artists or designers, our work can change how people think. We need to reflect to make sure our work is fair and does not hurt others. It helps us understand the impact of what we create.

For this week's exam, at first I was a little nervous and a bit tired because there was a lot of content to cover. During the exam, I carefully recalled the things I had learned in class, especially in the academic papers. However, for the listening exam, I didn't understand it well, even a little poorly. I felt that I could understand the individual words, but I had some difficulty understanding the entire sentences. This will also be a challenge for me.

Regarding my exam results, I feel they are about what I expected. For the listening notes, I got a score of 5.5. I think listening is a bit challenging for me, especially when having face-to-face conversations. I get so nervous that I forget to listen carefully to what the other person is saying, thus missing important information. The speaking speed in the video is also very fast, and there are many words I don't recognize. I keep paying attention to the meaning of these words, and as a result, I may not understand the whole sentence well.

Hey everyone! Today, I’m really excited to talk to you about climate change activism. I’ll break this down into three parts: the serious climate problem we’re facing right now, how art helps us understand climate change, and a small idea I came up with to get more people caring about this issue. First, let’s talk about climate change. Just like the poster shows, in recent years, it has become a huge problem that affects every corner of the world. Take a look at this figure (Fig 1) – the school kids in the picture are protesting. They’re shouting loudly, urging everyone to take action! The effects of climate change are clear: temperatures keep rising, and extreme weather like storms and droughts happen more often. This doesn’t just threaten our homes and the food we grow – even the animals around us are suffering because of it. Studies show that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. Our planet is definitely in trouble, but don’t lose hope – art can help us deal with this problem better. You might have heard of the artist Olafur Eliasson. He created a work called Ice Watch – those big ice blocks you see in Figs 3 and 4. Back when he placed these Greenland ice blocks in London, something powerful happened. When people in London watched those ice blocks melt right in front of their eyes, they started really thinking about climate change. Facts and numbers can sometimes feel distant, but art? It grabs our attention in a way that’s hard to ignore. Eliasson’s work does something amazing: it turns “rising sea levels” – a term that sounds abstract – into something real and touching. Art reaches our hearts, not just our heads, and that’s what makes us want to take action. Now, let’s talk about my idea – I call it the “Three Rooms / Three Worlds” Walk-through Time Experience. And we can hold this at our school’s UCA Gallery, just like Fig 9 shows. First up is the Past Room (Fig 5). Imagine walking in: there are real plants everywhere, fresh air fills your lungs, and you can hear nature sounds like birds singing. It’s like stepping into a nice, green dream – a vision of what our Earth was like when it was healthy. Then there’s the Present Room (Fig 6). It’s a mix of two sides: half is covered with green plants, but the other half is piled with plastic waste. You’ll hear city noises mixed with bird calls, too. This room shows where we are now – we still have beautiful parts of nature left, but we’re also drowning in pollution. We’re right in the middle of this climate mess, and we can’t look away. Finally, the Future Room (Figs 7 & 8). It’s dark with dim lights, filled with trash and dead plants. You’ll hear loud industrial noises, and there’s warm “climate-heat” lighting that makes you feel the rising temperatures. It looks really grim, but that’s the point – it’s supposed to push us to act before this bleak future becomes real. Walking through these three rooms isn’t just looking at displays – it lets people feel what climate change does. Using our school’s gallery means we can bring this experience to our school community. Maybe it’ll make more of us want to join in and fight against climate change.
