There are so many clubs not able to fill roles esp now after Covid. A good club and county training is essential. Communication is obviously part of being a leader but some leaders are quiet and lead by examples they set. Being loud and confident shouldn’t be a given. These leaders need to be nutured so they don’t feel just because they are quiet means that they aren’t worthy.

There should be a review of all of the National competitions/events and compare them side by side when it comes to prizes and opportunities. Why apply when you feel you’ll be awarded highly enough. 

Need to ask what winning means to the leaders. Why do people apply in the first place? No point in rushing the start of the programme just to tick a box. What other examples are out there, who can we steal ideas from?

There should be clear pathways so when it comes to awards you know exactly how the member progressed and that they aren’t just there because they are popular amongst the membership.

Success is seeing members move on from macra but still reference the leadership skills they gathered from the organisation. It’s seeing these members succeed in their own lives and potential take up presidential positions within Macra or other organisations if they feel inclined.

However, as an organisation we are not great at honoring the contribution of our members.

For example, a lot of our members feel the leadership awards does more to honor the sponsor rather than the recipient of the award.

I also want to put on the record that I recognise the necessity to get corporate sponsorship for the various activities we run.

I think the following example will illustrate my point


In 2018 I attended the Leadership Award final, it was held on a Tuesday night, kicking off at seven and nearly everyone was on the road a bit after nine. It was perhaps one of the most anti climatic events I attended. Because I thought to myself as I travelled home that night is the best the organisation can do to honour the cream of the crop in terms of our membership.
