The Situationship

In the midst of a rocky marriage with her boss and CFO, a dating podcast host finds solace in her perpetually single co-host, until her husband finds out about their affair and threatens to out them to the world and cancel their podcast.

Santa returns to the North Pole distraught. His elves can tell he isn’t feeling the Christmas spirit. Mrs. Claus is worried he may need to up his Lexapro. Soon he receives a long awaited letter from Chris. He thinks it will be to set up their next meeting (Santa has a cell phone and Chris has asked if they can just text, but Santa prefers hand written letters. He says it’s more romantic.). But this letter is not about their next meeting. It’s a breakup letter. Chris is still engaged after all. He regrets breaking off the affair, and he still loves Santa, but can’t keep living a double life. Santa is devastated. In his many centuries on Earth he has only loved one person as much as Chris: Mrs. Claus. But their love has faded with time. 

Back in New York City, Kevin and Chris continue with their Christmas preparation. Chris helps his fiancé with final wedding plans, but Kevin can tell his heart is not in it. He asks his dad if he was in love with Santa. Chris says yes. They talk about their relationship, Chris telling Kevin how they met (the same way Kevin accidentally stumbled upon them kissing) and of his trips to the North Pole. Kevin says he should be with Santa and call off the wedding. Chris says it’s not that simple. Kevin hasn’t written his letter to Santa yet this year. He decides he knows exactly what to ask for: his dad’s happiness. He wants Santa to stop the wedding, but Christmas Eve is in two days and he worries Santa won’t see the letter in time. He decides to stake out the post boxes for the elves who collect Santa’s letters. When he spots the elf collecting the letters, he follows him, sneaking through the portal to the North Pole.

Back in Santa’s workshop, Mrs. Claus finally asks Santa why he’s so glum. Santa decides to come clean, telling her all about the affair. She knows he’s bisexual. She’s known he wasn’t invested in their marriage for a long time. In fact, she hasn’t been either. She’s been having an emotional affair with Santa’s head elf, Dexter. They’ve never kissed, but sometimes exchange longing glances. She’s felt so guilty about it and is happy to hear Santa finally come out. Suddenly, the security elves bring a young boy into the room. They say he’s broken into Santa’s workshop. Santa recognizes Kevin immediately and demands they let him go. Kevin gives Santa his letter. Santa reads it. One tear escapes his eye. He asks Kevin if it’s true that Chris still loves him. Kevin says yes, that he must stop the wedding. But the clock is ticking. It’s early Christmas Eve morning. “How will the children of the world get their presents?” Santa wonders. Mrs. Claus says she knows how to drive the sleigh. She’ll help. Kevin offers to deliver presents. He’s much smaller so getting down chimneys will be easier for him. Santa runs off to stop the wedding.

We then get a montage of Kevin preparing to take over Santa’s duties, complete with him trying on the suit only to have it fall to the ground. A young elf seamstress offers to tailor the suit. She and Kevin fall in love, but that happens much later. Kevin delivers all the presents successfully, footage of which we see interspersed between footage of Santa’s journey to New York. 

In NYC, the wedding is about to commence. Chris is worried about Kevin. He hasn’t seen him in over a day. His fiancé is unbothered by his future son’s absence, reassuring us that rooting for the breaking up of this wedding is not evil. “Are there any objections?” they ask. “Yes!” Heads turn. Santa bursts through the doors. The crowd is bewildered. Santa confesses his love for Chris. They kiss at the alter. Chris’s fiancé stomps off.

Santa and Chris are married on New Year’s Eve. Mrs. Claus and Dexter sit in the front row, offering encouraging glances to the happy couple. Kevin is best man. They say their “I dos” at 11:59 and share their first kiss as a married couple as the clock strikes midnight. It’s a new year.
