(Laura)

Yes, scientific skills, creative thinking (thinking out of the box) are very important. As future leaders in life science field, this may be very important for you too, for example if want to develop new vaccines, design new biomedical equipment etc.
In my job as a lecturer, I also need good communication skills, teaching skills, report writing skills, time management skills as well as teamwork skills (Aakash).

I think that the jobs will be in Biotechnology, Microbiology and Genetics, specifically in Renewables Sector and Disease. This is due to the research on Climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic. We have realised how valuable innovation is, to the way we live and overcome problems such as vaccine production and waste remediation to reduce pollution into the environment. All of these fields provide a huge range of opportunities for further innovation and to improve our way of life (Jo).

Having a look at these would let you see what subjects / grades you need to get in so that you can plan your school study to get what you need.

There is also a Marine lab here in Aberdeen (https://www.gov.scot/publications/marine-scotland-contact-information/) They sometimes take part in public events where you can see round and meet staff (Laura)

It’s a very interesting question. So far, our explorations show us there is an extraordinary world of microbes such as bacteria, viruses and archaea. As much as we would love to know more about these wonderful organisms, exploring deep sea, identifying, and culturing them our labs still pose substantial challenge. So, I think we are yet to find their amazing diversity (Aakash).

Is it hard work working in life sciences?

I would say it is hard but that the difficulty can be subjective and varies from industry to academia. It is worth it as the job is extremely rewarding. Often due to the nature of how long it takes to make solutions, run experiments and use equipment there can be long hours involved. However the job has many benefits, such as producing life changing research, the training and assistance of others, which is very fulfilling. If you work in academia in teaching or technical work, there is usually a reduction in workload to allow you to carry out research and maintenance tasks as well as take holidays in the Summer period and Christmas period when the students are on their holidays. In research and industry this is slightly different and depends on your work but you can be more flexible depending on your research at the time and what results are required for the company in your industry (Jo).

I was always interested in Science from as young as I can remember, I used to take ticks from my dog and look at them under the microscope. I was fascinated by plants, animals and human and animal diseases. I was not sure about the options available to me when I was at school and I studied all three of the Sciences to get an understanding of where I would like to go. I was also always interested in History and English and communication. Through my time at school I realised that Biology was my favourite, I then did some volunteering with the Environmental Research Institute researching bird habitats on the island of Stroma at age 16. I also did my Nuffield Bursary and I was given the opportunity to work in a Biology laboratory. I loved it and realised this was what I wanted to do. I used to think that Science was working in a white coat and not communicating with others often and that made me question my choices, I then went to some open days and from my volunteering realised that Science is about communication and that communication of ideas and creativity were also important in Science. This made me really keen to study Science, specifically Life Sciences. I undertook a degree in Biomedical Science with Bioscience. This allowed me to further choose my career path in Biology thereafter (Jo).
