Racism In Sport

Racism means to discriminate or antagonize against someone of a different race based on the belief that their own race is superior, this still happens in sports around the world. There are groups such as KickItOut that expose and show that there are still issues related to this in sport. They also bring attention to issues such as Chelsea fans anti-Semitic chants so that the club and governing body can punish the fans.
Sport is a microcosm of society, this can be seen as racism in sport used to be a lot worse but as the sport has become more fair and less racist, society has also become less racist. An example of how racism has been bad in the past would be when John Barnes spoke about how bananas were thrown at him during a match.

Racism affects players as well as fans. This is true for fans because if a fan goes to a game for the first time and they hear the racist chants, they will be less likely to go again to the next game as they may feel threatened or unsafe by other fans. It also affects the popularity of the sport because if there are lots of accusations about the sport being racist, then people who are looking to get into a new sport will most likely choose to start another sport. This may also lead to advertisers and sponsors pulling away from deals associated with the sports clubs and leagues as it affects their image, and may stop further sponsor deals in the future from occurring.
Players may also start to under perform due to racism as they lose confidence and focus. An example of this is Danny Rose who recently said in an interview, he can't wait to see the back of the sport after he retires.; Danny has faced mental issues in the past and these further problems worsen his situation.
Football currently has a bad reputation due t incidents that occur such as racially motivated chants.
More players have started to stand up to these issues in various sports, for example Colin Kaepernick decided to take a knee during the national anthem to protest police brutality against black people. Colin lost his NFL contract because of this but gained a sponsorship deal with Nike instead. Colin used the sport to raise awareness and make a change.

Gender issues are still a big talking point in sport as many people are still fighting to make women's sports accessible and fair when compared to men's sports. Women may find it harder to get jobs in sports as commentators or coaches, but recently there has been a rise in women gaining jobs in sports.

Media Coverage off Women's' Sports

Women's sports are covered by the media much less than Male Sports and advertising is is nearly non-existent. This reduces the opportunities for women as there are less role models advertised, less facilities and less teams. The lack of media coverage makes it hard for sponsors to be persuaded to invest lots of money and therefore the athletes don't get paid anywhere near the wages of men. Also money then can't be invested in facilities and equipment which may affect their progression as an athlete.

Issues that occur in Womens' Sports

There are many issues that occur in women's' sports that don't happen in men's sports such as sexist fans, for example Alex Scott who in the past has said that she received abuse and threats of rape. She said she tried to ignore it but theses things must not be ignored otherwise it will continue to happen, organisations have brought attention to these issues and gradually they are being reduced.
Women will struggle more than men to succeed in sport mainly because men get paid more and have more sourced of money to allow for better facilities etc, which allows them to have their career as a full time job, therefore they can train for much longer as they have more free time. Women have to have other jobs to live a good life which consumes a lot of time which could be used for training. Therefore this will affect the skill of women as athletes as they can't train as much as men.
