The work is an example of a manuscript, an element that is studied in the context of the history of monasteries and their importance in having handed down ancient work. It could be used also to provide evidence for the history and development of musical scoring and chant.

- The four evangelists are Matthew, Luke, John and Mark:

1) Matthew is an angel,
2) Luke is an ox,
3) John an eagle,
4) Mark is a lion.

- Looking to the Chi Rho page we can see 4 mice and 2 cats.

- The Chi and Rho are the two initial letters of the word Christ. The Chi forms a cross shape.

- Animals and other devices are used to decorate the space between lines.
- The intricacy of some of the decoration raises the question of weither the scribes could call on the assistance of magnifying instruments, crystal for instance.
- The decoration combines traditional Christian iconography with the ornate swirling motifs typical of Insular art (Gospel books).
