Initial assessment will determine students level and what kind of supports they need. It is Important because some students may seem to have very good English skills, but they may not have the same understanding and productions in their language communities. Initial assessment would catch these students and provide them with support and adaptations. This process includes a family interview (with administration and interpreter), student profile information (all teachers will refer to), and assessments (e.g. student oral interview, picture response, first language writing and reading sample).

Previewing a text before reading to increase the chances of comprehension and retention. Strategies will include:
1) Discuss key vocabulary words;
2) Use pictures that relate to word
3) Use gestures/actions to help with comprehension
4) Use this time to review academic concepts (e.g. semantics and syntax)
5) Use prior knowledge to connect what they already know to the new concept;
6) Revisit vocabulary words in different ways
7) Relate to things that are familiar and of interest to them
- Provide opportunities for students to work in small groups with English speaking peers
- Respond to a series of teacher-generated statements (i.e. as shown in the video’s media literacy lesson with the cereal box and why students would choose to buy it).
- Act out different roles from stories (Readers Theatre)

A teacher could make intentional mistakes on the board and ask the class to find and correct the mistakes to demonstrate what they know. It is a great way to discuss as a class, in a safe environment, common errors. I believe students exposed to this type of activity are less difficult on themselves when they make mistakes because they see the teacher make mistakes and that it is no big deal.

A teacher can also reference a word wall in the classroom. I have seen word walls in many classrooms. It’s a great way to reinforce independent spelling strategies.

Students can write in a journal every day. A journal is meant as a means for self-expression and as a tool to practice writing skills. The students will show you what they know about writing through their journal.
- Students can use a personal word dictionary to assist with vocabulary and site words.
-Also use a personal checklist during writing tasks for students to refer to
- Have students draft ideas in first language
- Have students create and use a writing portfolio that includes samples of writing, this way you can see progress throughout the year
