My initial feelings towards this task seem quite mixed which is certainly overwhelming. I admire seeing the creative thinking processes of people come to life through filming and editing skills, and I have always had the desire to do the same however I have no experience in this type of work. When I watch any sort of video I find myself analysing the creative choices behind the production such as visuals or the music and how it makes me feel. I do this instead of simply watching because it’s so interesting and I appreciate every decision made in the process. I think my overwhelmed feeling comes from excitement of getting to promote something I am passionate about, while learning new skills I have always wanted to have, however I am uncertain about my capabilities in grasping these skills and promoting my product/message effectively. I want to be impactful to my target audience just how other videos impact me however the project seems intimidating as I don’t have a clear idea of what I would like to develop. There are so many possibilities and I don’t know where to get started.

I know that I like the concept of promoting an important message or awareness for something, as I find videos like this engaging and typically leaving an emotional impact on the audience. I believe mental health is important to have awareness for, particularly in adolescents so I could promote an organisation that supports this. I also love baking as well as drawing/painting which could be incorporated into the idea of individuality and expressing yourself.

This video was useful because I could pin point the specific mental health disorders that schools cause. Grades are an overwhelming source if anxiety.
- students are taught to base their self worth on their grades

Chingching Chang (2008) Increasing Mental Health Literacy via Narrative Advertising, Journal of Health Communication, pp. 37-55

This research article talks about the effectiveness of narrative advertising as a strategy for increasing mental illness literacy ( ability to understand and use information to promote and maintain well being). This was a useful source because it explains that narrative advertising is a more effective strategy to use as opposed to argument advertising, as it is engaging and elicits an emotional response, causing the audience to sympathise with people suffering depression. The article also expresses the idea of advocating with supportive attitudes towards those suffering mental illness. It has helped me clarify that the education system

2. Brännlund, Annica, Strandh, Mattias & Nilsson, Karina 2017, ‘Mental-health and educational achievement: the link between poor mental-health and upper secondary school completion and grades’, Journal of Mental Health (Abingdon, England), vol. 26, no. 4, pp. 318–325.
This research article analyses the relationship between mental health in adolescents and upper secondary school completion and grades. It was a useful source because it examines wether poor mental health experiences in teenage years, have a negative relationship with school achievement. The results showed that mental health problems during the late teens are more strongly and negatively associated with not completing upper secondary education. This research focused on participants with existing mental illness, I need to do further research for clearer information on wether the school work itself is the cause of mental illness.

3. O’Reilly, M., Adams, S., Whiteman, N. et al. Whose Responsibility is Adolescent’s Mental Health in the UK? Perspectives of Key Stakeholders. School Mental Health 10, 450–461 (2018).
This source is about the relationship between adolescents and the roles and responsibilities of those at the forefront of implementing change. This was extremely beneficial to me in building my message further and understanding the perspectives of my target audience. The themes derived for the study were that mental health promotion and prevention is not perceived to be a primary role of a teacher and that adolescents rely on teachers for mental health support and education about mental health. It also speaks on the need for funding and support beyond school eg. government.

4. O’Reilly, M., Svirydzenka, N., Adams, S. et al, 2018 Review of mental health promotion interventions in schools. Soc Psychiatry Psychiatry Epidemiol p. 53, https://doi.org/10.1007/s00127-018-1530-1
This research article analyses the promotion of mental health in schools. It brings light to the fact that actions need to be taken to create environments that support mental health, and this promotion should not be limited to the health sector but also education. This was a useful source as it explains that school is a pervasive environment for adolescents and it is presenting unbearable amounts of stress, worry and unhappiness which is effecting their performance. It continues to explain that promotion should therefore consider the educational context as an environment to build security, agency and freedom in young people. The article includes information on policies that some Governments have put in place in various countries including mental health training for students. It states that promotion in schools needs to be achieved through a continuum of programmes including inclusivity, reducing barriers to student learning, listening to student and community needs and having engaged and supported staff.

5. Schulte-Körne G 2016, Mental Health Problems in a School Setting in Children and Adolescents. Dtsch Arztebl Int pp.183-190
This research article is based on the mental health problems present in school children, and the factors associated with school that effect there mental development. This was a useful source because it has pin pointed certain factors around school that contribute to mental health, bringing light to the fact that learning disorders result in significant rates of anxiety and avoidance of school. It also explains that unsupportive teacher-student relationships and poor classroom climate will increase the risk of children developing mental health problems.

6. This was beneficial to my research because it evaluates the outcome of applying mental health promotion models to awareness campaigns that are designed to improve mental health literacy and early help seeking. The study found that visits to websites and calls to information lines increased after the awareness campaign.

7. Khan, Atlas, Kausar 2013, Effect of perceived Academic stress on students' performance , G.C University Lahore, Vol. 7, No. 2, pp. 146-151
This article explores the effect of academic stress on student performance. I was able to gain a good understanding of the way school work effects students mentally as the study found that there were stress symptoms of no energy, elevated blood pressure, depressed mood, increase in cravings, impatience, troubles concentrating and nervous strain. This is due to schools placing a frightening and demanding perception on school work. When students perceive their education as a threat it is damaging to their well being which brings hopelessness and low achievement.

Attention
I plan to draw the audience into my video and keep their attention through the aesthetics of the opening scene. After looking at some inspiration on Pinterest I think it could be effective to open with no dialogue, but have a shot of a teenager studying under a lamp in their bedroom late at night which is visually mysterious and not overly obvious as to what the video message is, therefore the audience stays intrigued. The teenager will show behavioural signs of stress and anxiety such as heavy breathing and fidgeting to create a realistic image of an adolescent suffering mentally. I want this environment to seem quite isolated and dark. The element of a laptop on the desk could also incorperate text messages or academic results.

Interest
This will capture the interest of my target audience because it will reveal a harsh reality of something that they have a major role in supporting. The scene will show a chaos of assignments and clutter on the teenagers desk to easyily identify that the subject is a student, therefore employees of the education system including teachers and government workers will feel an instant relation to the content of this video. Once I have the audiences interest they will be forced to see the ugly truth of something they are responsible for.

Desire
The initial feeling of the video will be peaceful yet mysterious and dreary, in a dimly lit bedroom where a teenager silently sits at her desk working in the middle of the night. One this scene is established the emotion will change to become worrying and have a disturebed feeling as she shows panicked behaviour. The sound of her breathing will intensify and become rapid, causing the scene to feel restless and uneasy. The dark environment will also add the feeling of isolation, fear and stress to the scene.

Action
Through the concept of pathos I hope that the audience will feel shock from seeing that the academic expectations of school work can lead to such serious issues in the mental health of adolescents. I wan't them to sympathise with the subject however also to feel a sense of guilt and pity for realising that student well being needs to be supported and prioritised before academic results. I will promote this message at the end in bold text and use inclusive language such as 'your' [students], to further utilise the concept of pathos and cause guilt in the viewer, to make it clear that the well being of our education system is their own responsibility. The bottom of the screen will also have text directing the viewer to a website for specific details on how the education system should promote and support mental health in schools.

My promotional video will begin with a scene that is easily identifiable. The main focus will be a teenager sitting at their desk located at the window of their bedroom, where there is initially absence of sound as she sits in the nocturnal silence of the night. The area of her desk is dimly lit from the warm glow of her lamp, however the rest of the bedroom room is dark and lifeless, where the fabrics of her bedding and furniture are muted hues.

The camera is positioned as a long shot from the door, containing the environment that she is located in which establishes the mysterious atmosphere. The camera frames the girl in the centre of the composition sitting with her back towards the camera. The angle will then cut to a closer side view of the desk area where she is scribbling notes in a workbook. The space is lit with a yellow tone from the lamp and cluttered with assignment papers and textbooks of loud and stimulating colours. There are pens and other forms of stationary plowed under the mess along with tangled cords, scrunched up paper and tissues, and a plate left with crumbs. These items on the desk have a vivid colour palette compared to the dull and neutral shades of her jumper and sweatpants. At this point the subtle rhythm of a clock ticking will begin as the camera changes to an over the shoulder shot.

Her attention is drawn to the laptop screen in front of her where there is the sound of a notification displaying her low academic results in red text. Music with an anxious and tense tone will enter this scene along with the clock ticking, and the webpage will be bold and have an authoritative feel in terms of layout. The scene intensifies as the diegetic sound of heavy breathing occurs. The camera shots will cut at a faster pace as the anxiety of the situation grows, capturing close ups of her hand fidgeting with the pen on the desk, the panicked expression on her face and her gesture of ventilating the collar of her jumper. This scene will become unsettling from the music, heavy breathing and anxious behaviour of the subject.

The camera will return to the angle capturing the back of the girl sitting in front of the laptop, still illuminated only by her lamp. The clock ticking and music will halt to a stop, she will shut the screen of her laptop and helplessly burry her head in her arms that lean on top of the desk. This is the final frame that the camera lands on, ending with the girl turning off the lamp so the scene is left in a dark and dreary state. At this moment, text will appear on the screen to clearly state the message that mental health in schools should be prioritised before academic achievement. A link will appear at the bottom for the audience to access further information.

I believe there is a possibility that the education system is oblivious or ignorant towards the idea that adolescent students can develop mental illness from the pressure of school, possibly because of the stigma that they are 'just kids with mood swings'. I wan't to shock the audience into seeing the reality of what happens to mental health when academic achievement is prioritised, and elicit a feeling of guilt and pity. I will achieve this by creating a flustered and anxious tone which is quite unsettling. This could also convey a tone of desperation.

The colours that convey the emotions that I wan't to elicit are generally warm including red, yellow and orange, which should reoccur across the items on the desk. These are shown to increase blood circulation and breathing rates, yellow particularly is the colour that stimulates the anxiety centre of the brain. It is a warning sign and can have negative connotations. For the clothing of the subject and the rest of the bedroom the colours need to be dull and neutral to convey the negative state of mind she is in.

Reflection
From creating a mind map around my chosen message, it has helped me to create and connect ideas on a deeper level. I have collected more knowledge on this task and now understand the many different perspectives of mental health in schools, pinpointing the most important information and key words. I mentioned 'stress', 'support', and 'pressure' throughout the mind map which I can now make a connection between and develop a clearer idea of what my video should focus on; the lack of support on mental health in schools due to prioritisation of academic results. I believe that this is a creative and different approach, because the promo videos that already exist tend to be targeted at the individuals suffering mental illnesses, rather than the factors/people that could be causing the mental illness.
