I used to work at Strabucks and really every day I threw food away and I'm talking about that because I worked for 3 years and it's really a huge amount of food thrown away.  
I believe that buying vegetables like this doesn't change the taste of the food, much less hurt you.
I believe that they conditioned us to think that we should not choose ugly things. 
It's just the nature of fresh produce. 
also believe that if that food is really donated it would help many people who need it, like the food banks.
