General Pershing is best known for having courage under fire, While commissioned as a Second Lieutenant he led his troops over 140 miles through rough terrain for forty-six hours bringing every man and animals in perfect condition (The New York Times, 1948). Even though General Pershing was an excellent leader he was tough on his troops, some found him to be autocratic because of the leadership traits that were distilled into him since West Point. Others believe that General Pershings stern demeanor came from being the first white officer to command the all black 10th Cavalry.

One of General Pershing's biggest accomplishments early on in his career was to be one of the first commanders of the 10th Calvary (NebraskaToday, 2017). The next biggest accomplishment which led him to become one of the greatest commanders of all time was commanding the AEF in WWI. His last and greatest accomplishment was becoming the first and only Six Star General which allowed him to serve on active duty until he died in 1948 at the age of 87. Some of General Pershing's failures through his career was his lack of communication in his early career which lost a lot of American Soldiers lives, and his inability to have compassion for his troops by being autocratic.

Analysis: Why Studying the leader is important today.

General Pershing was not just a general, he was the highest ranking officer in the American military. It is important that we learn from his ability to organize and train mass amounts of troops during WWI. As a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, it has been instilled into my brain that if I want to get promoted any higher, that I need to get an education. I believe that the Marine Corps is evolving to fit the discipline that General Pershing instilled into his troops because again our war is evolving and we need to be prepared at all costs.

General Pershing was not destined to be a leader, but he took charge of his destiny and arose past is upbringing to become one of the greatest commanders of all time. The AEF which was under his command in WWI ended, was the sole reason that we won the war, without the American soldiers , our European allies would have faced an uncertain outcome (Historicmissourians, 2022).
