Having empathy will help a volunteer contact with their patient and allow for a better understanding. Empathy is also important as at times of need sometimes all someone needs is just maybe a shoulder to cry on and for someone there to listen to them for them to vent to. In situations like this all they needed is for a volunteer to show empathy and allow them to tell their story this can be the difference in them being able to solver their problem or the problem becoming bigger.
