The role of parents and teachers is crucial in creating inclusive classrooms. Collaboration between parents and teachers is essential for supporting students' academic, social, and emotional development. Here's an overview of the impact of collaboration and strategies to improve it:

Impact of Collaboration (or Lack of It):
Collaboration between parents and teachers can greatly enhance the learning experience for students. When parents and teachers work together, they can better understand and address students' individual needs, strengths, and challenges. This collaboration fosters a sense of shared responsibility and promotes consistent support for students both at home and in school. On the other hand, a lack of collaboration can lead to misunderstandings, miscommunication, and missed opportunities to support students effectively.

Strategies to Improve Collaboration:

Establish Open Communication Channels: Create open and welcoming lines of communication between parents and teachers. This can include regular newsletters, emails, or online platforms to share updates, important information, and upcoming events. Encourage parents to reach out and provide a means for them to easily contact teachers. Respond promptly and respectfully to inquiries or concerns.

Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conduct parent-teacher conferences to discuss students' progress, strengths, areas for improvement, and any specific needs or accommodations. These conferences provide an opportunity for both parents and teachers to share insights, exchange information, and collaborate on strategies to support the student's learning and development.

Classroom Volunteer Opportunities: Invite parents to participate as volunteers in the classroom. This could involve assisting with classroom activities, field trips, or special events. Classroom volunteers can contribute their unique skills, knowledge, and experiences, while also developing a better understanding of the classroom environment and the learning needs of the students.

Parent Education Workshops: Organize workshops or information sessions for parents to learn about various topics related to education, child development, and strategies for supporting learning at home. These workshops can provide parents with valuable insights and tools to support their child's academic and social-emotional growth.

Individualized Student Support Plans: Collaborate with parents to develop individualized plans or goals for students who require additional support or have unique learning needs. Regularly review and update these plans, involving parents in the decision-making process. This collaboration ensures that parents' perspectives and insights are considered in designing appropriate interventions or accommodations for their child.

Parent Advisory Committees: Establish parent advisory committees or similar structures to involve parents in decision-making processes at the school or classroom level. These committees can provide a platform for parents to share their ideas, concerns, and suggestions, allowing their voices to be heard and actively contributing to shaping the school's inclusive practices.

Remember, collaboration is an ongoing process that requires effort and open-mindedness from both teachers and parents. By fostering strong partnerships, schools can create an inclusive and supportive environment that benefits the holistic development of all students.

In working with children with special needs who were integrated into the class, I had a similar strategy as in the video. A parent is truly a child's first teacher and knows the child's strengths and weaknesses. Open communication and cooperation, a quality relationship is for the benefit of the child and should be established. Teacher and parent should be partners even if the child has no difficulties, and in the case of a child with special needs, their mutual cooperation is even more important.

The importance of the relationship between teachers and parents is clear, but it should not be reduced only to communication, but also to effective collaboration. My examples can be countless, but I only explain one: monthly, my students have a task to work on a certain theme in the "home team" (for example, they recently worked with their parents - Flowers from recyclable materials"). Sometimes I bring this team from home to school as part of joint student-parent activities. In this way, parents constantly know that they too are part of the children's school education, not just the teachers, and they also value children with different problems, thus promoting inclusion and a true collaborative relationship.

I feel very disappointed when parents almost never communicate with me not even by phone. They show a great deal of indifference about their children's progress and behaviour at school, and in many cases they are rather aggressive. I try to come in touch with them, to inform them and to persuade them to come at school and discuss about their child. As I am an English teacher, and not the main teacher of the class, their behaviour towards me is really dismissive.

Teacher-parent collaboration in developing a child's competences is crucial. Parents know their children better, but sometimes they lack awareness of how to deal with problems they face. On the other hand, teachers don't know children's emotional and social backgrounds so well that they can't recognize children's strengths and weaknesses, so it's difficult to identify the problem in order to eradicate it properly. Thus, frequent communication and collaboration is the only way to help children have secure, friendly, differentiated and adapted learning atmosphere.

First, I would like to thank you all for your different posts that were so interesting and helped me with my thinking.
And as for me, I'd like to share with you that statement : I work with pupils and parents just arrived from foreign countries and when they happen to be sent in a school that is used to working with parents, it is completely different than if the school isn't. And the first thing is the way they feel welcome at school, not only as the parent of that particular child, but as a person, with a language, a culture and an expertise that can be shared. The way they feel being part of educative community is of great importance if we want their children to feel confident and well at ease. This is the first step so they can fully succeed in classroom activities. This is a particular statement from my own experience but I think it is a good way to enlight how important collaboration between parents and teachers should start above all.
