A main reason is safety. Fish form large groups of similar sized individuals of the same species in order to protect themselves from being singled out by a predator. Another reason would be to find food. When in a school there isn't really one fish that's in charge a school is more like a team. They work together to find food making it easier because there are more individuals looking at once. The last big reason would be mating. Whether the males and females school together to mate with one and other or whether the females school together to protect themselves from the males. Schooling is a necessary behavior.

Adaptation: Fish adapted this behavior for protection and for survival. Without it more would be hunted and they may have a harder time finding food to keep the species alive.

Personal statement: In my opinion fish need to school, if they didn't we would most likely not have the same number of fish species as we do now. This is because they would be over hunted and or die to lack of food.
